Stegomastodons were ancient tusked mammals, distant cousins to mammoths and modern elephants. They lived an estimated 1.2 million years ago. Only a couple hundred Stegomastodon fossils have been discovered in the world. The fossil was eventually excavated and brought to a museum. Danish Ho recently filmed this strange-looking animal in Malaysia that is commonly known as a hammerhead worm. According to experts, it belongs to the genus Bipalum,but its exact species is unknown. The biology of a hammerhead worm is also very strange. Its mouth is also its anus. If separated, a piece of its body can grow into another worm. The bird showed no signs of fear, even stopping under the tourist’s leg and tapping at her camera lens. This is just one shocking example of the astonishing amount of plastic that can pollute our environment. An estimated 6.3 billion metric tons of plastic waste has been generated, a new study found, and only 9% of that total is recycled. They employ a bell shape, like the Eiffel tower, to ensure each ant bears an equal load. When one section becomes overloaded, it collapses, and the ants scramble to reform. This process continues until a stable structure is achieved. The tower serves as a base of operations and even acts as a shelter from rain. Scientists hope that these mechanics can help improve the capabilities of tiny robots that act as a swarm. A car accident caused thousands of hagfish to spill on the highway, coating the road—and even a car—with slime. Hagfish, also called slime eels, secrete huge amounts of an extremely slippery mucus when stressed. The Oregon Department of Transportation used firehoses and a bulldozer to clear away the goo.
