Adorable Baby Brown Bear Rescued | National Geographic
This three-month-old brown bear cub was rescued after being found alone in western Russia. It was transported to Meshchyora National Park by wildlife authorities. It was kept in a rehab center while being examined. They hope that the cub will be able to reintegrate into the wild after being released. Bears as young as five months old have been found to survive on their own in the wild, and the more contact the cub has with humans the more difficult it becomes to rehabilitate. Brown bears are rare or extinct in western Russia, where they face threats from human contact. ➡ Subscribe: https://on.natgeo.com/4p5A0D6 About National Geographic: National Geographic is the world's premium destination for science, exploration, and adventure. Experts initially thought his chances for survival were low. Hawks and eagles are normally mortal enemies. Hawks feed on small rodents, rabbits, and snakes, but Spunky was seen eating a flounder that he stole from one of the other eagles. He has shown some signs of his hawk ancestry including swooping down and picking up forest debris, which young hawks do while learning to catch prey. Spunky's time with his adopted family may be short. Soon the eagles will migrate north, but hawks typically don't leave the region. New Discovery: These Seals Can Recognize Each Other's 'Voices' | National Geographic
July 20, 2017 - Male elephant seals assert their dominance not only through physical size, but also by using their voices. Their vocalizations are like fingerprints—completely unique to each individual. Less dominant males recognize the calls of more dominant rivals and steer clear. This ability to remember and recognize individual calls for social decision-making is unusual outside of humans. The calls contain music-like elements, including timbre and rhythm. Scientists say that research into this behavior may shed light on the origins of music. ➡ Subscribe: https://on.natgeo.com/4p5A0D6 About National Geographic: National Geographic is the world's premium destination for science, exploration, and adventure. Two German ornithologists secured a camera capable of recording 1,500 frames a second. “The regime was developing the first helicopters,” says Karl Schuchmann, former curator of birds at the Alexander Koenig Zoological Research Museum in Bonn. “They wanted to know how birds could hover on the spot.” In the United States, Crawford Greenewalt had served science on the opposite side of the war effort. A dozen years after the German ornithologists published, Greenewalt picked up the thread of their investigation. His wife, Margaretta, had become interested in bird-watching, and from her Greenewalt caught what he called “hummingbird fever.” His hummingbird photographs were first published in the November 1960 issue of National Geographic. Today, Anand Varma continues this legacy by filming hummingbirds like never before: with a 4K camera that is capable of capturing the bird at 3000 frames per second. This behind the scenes video gives a sneak peak into Varma’s process and passion. National Geographic Editor in Chief Susan Goldberg interviewed him in Washington, D.C., as he prepared to address leaders at the World Bank. In this candid and emotional interview, Damon discusses the world’s water crisis and how his nonprofit is trying to push the needle towards progress. The percentage of people defecating in the open air declined worldwide from 1990 to 2015, with the most dramatic reductions in some of the least developed countries. Yet nearly 950 million people still practice this public health hazard—a challenge augmented by population growth. Damon hopes that solutions such as microfinancing will help open air defecation be a thing of the past by 2030.
