A deer was struggling to get its footing on a smooth frozen pond in the central Oregon town of Sunriver. But firefighter Jeff "JJ" Johnston, arriving on the scene at Woodlands Golf Course, had the right equipment to help. An ice rescue sled spreads out weight on thin ice and stays afloat on water. Nudging the deer with the front of the craft, the fireman carefully pushed it ashore. A mutiny erupted in the months to come and left 115 dead, many of whom were murdered. The grave discovered this month, however, included five individuals who likely died before the mutiny. Archaeologists suggest this to be the case because the bodies were buried respectfully. The bodies were also buried with artifacts that can give us more information on what happened in the tragic tale of Murder Island. Conservators with Madrid-based Da Vinci Restauro were examining a crucifix from a church about 80 miles north of the Spanish capital. The statue turned out to be hollow with a removable panel. Located on the figure’s backside, the opening was hidden by the cross. Inside lay a letter describing life in Spain in 1777, written by a chaplain, Joaquín Mínguez. The priest names the reigning monarch, Carlos III, catalogues crops and products such as wine. He tells of the Inquisition and of happier customs, with music and games. Mínguez seems to have intentionally placed the letter to serve as a time capsule. The document itself will go to an archive. But to honor Mínguez's wishes, a copy will stay within the statue. The series tells the story of the life, work, murder and legacy of gorilla researcher Dian Fossey. The series will weave together three story strands. The first is the story of Dian's life and work - her childhood, her early days researching in Congo and her arrival in Rwanda for the 18 years she studied Mountain Gorillas. The second strand covers Dian's murder in Rwanda and the trial of her American co-worker Wayne McGuire, who was found guilty of her murder. Wayne fled Rwanda before the trial began but was convicted in absentia. He has always maintained his innocence. We intend to reopen the case by reviewing the evidence (if it can be located) and speaking with people who knew and worked with Dian and were involved in investigating the murder. Finally, we will tell the story of Dian's legacy by filming the Pablo troop of gorillas, which includes the silverback Cantsbee, the most successful gorilla ever known. The series will use archive footage and still images, interviews with people who knew and worked with Dian, specially shot footage and reconstruction to tell the life story of Dian Fossey and the aftermath of her murder. The Buddhist pagoda was about 15 stories high and dates back to the Ming Dynasty. It was being renovated after the original was destroyed in 2008 during an earthquake. Now it will have to be renovated again. The fire burned for over four hours. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
