The study of animal behavior leaves little room for emotional-related explanations. Feelings in animals tend to be presented as functional explanations of behavior in a given situation. The notion of emotion has been completely overlooked, especially in the sixties, at the peak of animal experimentation, since it was easier to deny animal feelings like sadness or suffering, to guiltlessly carry out all sorts of tests. Recognizing the existence of animal feelings implies moral obligations. Things however are changing... and many scientists who study animal behavior are paying more and more attention to emotions. But how could it be otherwise? To better understand a behavior we need to compare it to an already seen already and understood situation. And what could better help us understand a specific behavior than our own experience, our own behavior and our own emotions. But light pollution can disorient them, causing them to crawl the wrong way—sometimes for hours. The researchers wanted to see what affect time spent crawling on land had on the hatchlings’ swimming abilities. After crawling on the treadmill, the scientists tested the turtles' level of exhaustion they swam. Even after long periods of crawling, they could still swim for a two-hour test. Although the hatchlings aren’t tired when they reach the water, more time spent on the beach means more time for them to fall prey to hungry predators and other threats. All the turtles used for the study were eventually released back into the ocean in their native habitat. But there is also a dark side to this Christmas story. Even the highest paid laborers only make 90 cents per pound of seed, while the lowest make 16 cents per pound. In addition, “cone pirates” poach these valuable cones away from the company laborers. Some climbers risk ascending with no safety equipment and can fall and be seriously injured—or even killed. It's a complex, and dangerous, process that allows people around the world to enjoy their holidays. During the recent coral spawning season, scientists were able to collect 171 billion sperm from 31 coral colonies, which were later frozen and preserved. The hope is to use the frozen sperm to help rebuild coral reefs as they face die-offs due to warming waters and habitat destruction.
