This is the first baby beaver born in this Scottish National Park in over 400 years! Beavers were extinct in Scotland but are finally returning. Scotland started to reintroduce them in 2009 officially. These beavers were born in Cairngroms National Park not too long ago. Last year the people responsible released four beaver families and hoped they would reproduce … and their wishes came true. That makes these baby beavers the first wild-born beavers in the National Park in over 400 years! Beavers are important ‘ecosystem engineers’. They change and re-naturalise the landscape around them. Starting in Tierra del Fuego in the very South of the American continent, we travel along the Andes towards the North and climb to heights of more than 5000 metres on the bolivian/peruvian Altiplano. Onward, we follow the course of the water downhill to the east and arrive in the Pantanal, the biggest wetland in the world. The waterfalls of the Rio Iguazu, which is a tributary to the huge Rio Parana, which again drains in the Atlantic Ocean at Buenos Aires, represent the awesome grand finale. Within their densely forested home, the colourful monkeys live in huge groups of up to 200 individuals. With plenty of mouths to feed, the mandrills travel over 10km every day in search of sustenance. Females make up the majority of the troop but it is fact the impressively coloured males that govern; the strongest of which is the alpha, who must lead from the front. The top position in the group is hotly contended and when two new males enter the group, a battle for dominance ensues.
