Our seasons shape the cycle of life in dramatic ways. Spring, summer, autumn or winter – every season is unique, each presenting nature with new challenges. The constant change in living conditions demands extraordinary feats from animals and plants throughout the year. And the survival strategies of the squirrel, fox and many others could hardly be more fascinating.
The journey through the year begins in a winter wonderland: snow blankets meadows and forests in a white veil. Trees groan under the weight of their white finery and snowflakes sparkle with refracted light. Winter casts a fairytale enchantment on the countryside. For the local fauna, however, the cold season is the hardest time of the year. Dipper, deer or fox - each species attempts in its own way to defy hunger and the cold.
As the increasing strength of the sun finally melts the snow and ice, the harbingers of spring are already waiting in the wings. Snowdrops, winter aconites and wood anemones bring blossoms to the spring world almost overnight, providing insects with their first food. From forests to meadows and fields – everywhere, nature is now awakening from its hibernation: birds are singing their hearts out again, insects buzz through the air, fresh green shoots sprout and flowers conjure up colours across the landscape. Many animals, like the squirrels, coot and frogs, begin to have offspring. The silent, barren winter is over, spring is the time of new beginnings, loud and colourful.
But the start of summer by no means brings calm to nature. The hot season is the “rush hour” of the year. Offspring require total parental attention, must be protected, fed and launched into adulthood. Squirrels, foxes, storks and ducks show their young how to stand on their own two feet and survive in the wild. Insects are at the peak of their reproductive abilities, producing one generation after another. Dragonflies unite in acrobatic ‘love wheels’, aphids conquer the summer meadows and mosquitoes hatch in their millions. Warmth, light and food in abundance promise a carefree time. But the tremendous power of summer also manifests itself in extremes of heat, lack of water and violent thunderstorms.
Life and death, partings and new beginnings – there is almost no other season in which they are so close together as in autumn. The foliage is now ablaze with splendid colours and animals find food in abundance. But the imminent winter, with all its hardships, is already lurking. A race against time begins: mushrooms shoot out of the ground, beechnuts ripen in their masses, migratory birds gather for their sojourn to the south and mice and squirrels tirelessly gather their winter supplies. Until the trees finally shed their last leaves. Heralding the oncoming winter...
The film takes us on a breathtaking tour of discovery through indigenous nature. Extraordinary animal stories – some humorous, some dramatic, but always with an eye to the season’s special features – bring the magic of our seasons to life in a fascinating way.
