Built by the British in the mid-18th century (around 1761), Fort Charlotte was designed to defend Jamaica’s northwestern coastline and Lucea Harbour from potential naval attacks during the colonial era.
Strategically positioned overlooking the sea, the fort once featured over 20 cannons and a barracks that housed around 50 soldiers, making it a key military outpost at the time.
Named after Queen Charlotte, the wife of King George III, the fort played an important role in protecting British interests in Jamaica during a period of intense rivalry with other European powers.
Today, Fort Charlotte stands as a historic national monument, with its stone walls, old artillery platforms, and remaining cannons offering a glimpse into Jamaica’s colonial past.
Although largely abandoned, it remains one of the best-preserved forts in western Jamaica, quietly overlooking the harbour it once protected.
