Practising biathlon requires very diverse qualities: excellent physical capacities of endurance, along with intense concentration and extreme precision when getting into position for the shooting section. Indeed, it is not easy to keep cool to aim at a target when your heart is beating fast. These are qualities which Halvard Hanevold developed throughout his long career. This civil engineer qualified in building machinery and tools was able to apply a scientific and methodical approach to his sports performance. This is certainly what enabled him to remain, for more than 15 years, an essential, yet discreet, figure in the world of biathlon. His first steps into the world of Olympism were taken at home in Norway in 1994, at the Lillehammer Games. He very quickly became a pillar of the relay team, in which he amassed many rewards (he was a four-time world champion). He was always the first athlete in the relay. A fine tactician and good shooter, he launched his team onto the road to success. In 1998, he became Olympic champion for the first time, winning the 20km. A few days later, with the Norwegian relay team, he was beaten by five seconds and won silver. In the race, Dillard won gold in an incredibly tight photo-finish at the line. Harrison Dillard began hurdling at the age of eight, running in an alley and using the springs from abandoned car seats as barriers. During 1947 and 1948, Dillard won 82 straight races. However, in the final of the 110m hurdles at the U.S. Olympic trials, he lost his stride and failed to finish. Fortunately, he had already qualified in the 100m dash. At the Olympic Games in London in 1948, Dillard edged teammate Barney Ewell for the gold medal. He won a second gold medal in the 4x100m relay. Freestyle skiing, specifically the moguls event, made its debut at the 1992 Albertville Olympics. The local fans hoped for a French victory and they were not disappointed, as their entrants finished first, second and fourth. The winner was the popular Edgar Grospiron, who recorded the fastest time of the final and the second best scores for turns and air. His supporters broke down the security fence lining the course and hoisted him on their shoulders. When asked if he followed a special diet while training, Grospiron answered, "Yes: one week red wine and the next week white wine." In 1994, he competed in the Lillehammer Olympics and earned a bronze medal in the moguls event. The USA basketball team had performed poorly in a European summer tour before the Mexico 1968 Olympic Games and, therefore, wasn't considered the top favourite for the Olympic tournament. However, as the team had won six consecutive Olympic gold medals in this event, it was definitely a team to be respected. Team USA reached the final match against Yugoslavia with a perfect 8-0 record, including a 73--58 win against the same Yugoslavian team in the group stage. Meanwhile Yugoslavia, had beaten the Soviet Union by a single point (63-62) to make it to the final. With a comfortable 65-50, team USA beat Yugoslavia and won its seventh consecutive Olympic gold medal. Raisa Smetanina began her Olympic journey in 1976 by taking a silver medal in the 5km race, missing a gold medal by just over one second. The next day she won the 10km by less than a second over Helena Takalo. She gained a second gold medal as a member of the USSR's 4x5km relay team. Smetanina would later become the first woman to win 10 medals in her career. She is also the first athlete to step onto the podium at five editions of the Olympic Winter Games, and one of only three Olympians to have won silver medals five times. Canadian swimmer George Hodgson was an unusual Olympic champion. At only 18 years-old when he competed at the Stockholm 1912 Olympic Games, Hodgson had only been swimming competitively for three years. He was also the lone Canadian swimmer at the Games, which didn't stop him from taking his country to the top of the podium twice. Hodgson won two Olympic gold medals after he broke the world records twice for both the 400m and 1500m freestyle events at the Stockholm Olympics. After such an impressive sequence of results, George Hodgson retired from swimming competitions, ending his short but powerful sporting history. George Hodgson might have competed for less than a full Olympiad, but he definitely made his mark in Olympic history. After winning two gold medals at the Calgary 1988 Olympic Winter Games, Vreni Schneider continued to dominate women's Alpine skiing in the years to come, but at the 1992 Winter Olympics she was hampered by a herniated disc and finished out of the medals. At the 1994 Lillehammer Games, however, she was back in full form. She earned a silver medal in the alpine combined event and a bronze in the giant slalom. Fifth after the first run of the slalom, Schneider attacked the second run with such intensity that she won the gold medal. Schneider was the first female Alpine skier to win three gold medals and the first to earn five total medals. Donald Trump's team used a formula to calculate who pays what in a sweeping round of global tariffs. In a statement published Wednesday night to explain its methodology for tariffs that rocked the globe, the United States Trade Representative detailed a formula that divides a country’s trade surplus with the US by its total exports, based on data from the US Census Bureau for 2024. In 1975 Franz Klammer won eight of nine World Cup downhill races. When the Olympic Games came to Innsbruck the following year, there was great pressure on Klammer as an Austrian favourite competing in Austria. Defending champion Bernhard Russi exerted further pressure by speeding down the Olympic hill in 1:46.06. Since the London 1948 Olympic Games, Yugoslavia had been able to make it all the way through to the final of the Olympic football tournament. However, they hadn't been able to succeed and win the gold medal on any occasion. This time they faced the Danish team, which had also been to three Olympic finals previously, though not consecutively. Yugoslavian started the match with a quick goal in the first minute from their captain Milan Galic, which led the way to a solid 3-1 win that gave Yugoslavia their first Olympic football title. China retaliated against US President Donald Trump’s latest tariffs by imposing a 34% tariff on all imports from the US starting April 10.
