Nvidia Eases Concerns About China With Upbeat Sales Forecast
Dan Ives, Global Head: Technology at Wedbush Securities, reacts to Nvidia earnings and discusses the outlook for the company and Big Tech. He speaks with Bloomberg's Tom Keene and Paul Sweeney. Nvidia Corp. Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang soothed investor fears about a China slowdown by delivering a solid sales forecast, saying that the AI computing market is still poised for “exponential growth.”  The company expects revenue of about $45 billion in the second fiscal quarter, which runs through July, it said Wednesday. New export restrictions will cost Nvidia about $8 billion in Chinese revenue during the period, but the forecast still met analysts’ estimates. That helped boost the shares as much as 6.4% after markets opened in New York on Thursday. The outlook shows that Nvidia is ramping up production of Blackwell, its latest semiconductor design. The chipmaker — now the world’s largest by revenue and market value — dominates the field of AI accelerators, the components that help develop and run artificial intelligence models. And an ever-broader lineup of hardware and software is letting Nvidia sell more products to customers.  As part of that push, the company is offering its chips as part of whole computer systems — a move it says is necessary to speed up the deployment of more complex and powerful technology. Nvidia expects AI infrastructure to eventually transform economies around the world.  “Every nation now sees AI as core to the next industrial revolution — a new industry that produces intelligence and essential infrastructure for every economy,” Huang said on a conference call with analysts. Sales in the first quarter, which ended April 27, rose 69% to $44.1 billion. That compared with an average estimate of $43.3 billion. -------- More on Bloomberg Television and Markets Like this video? Stocks Rise as Tariff Ruling Fuels Appetite
Anastasia Amoroso, Chief Investment Strategist at iCapital, joins to talk about a resilient US economy and momentum in markets in spite of Washington uncertainty. A tech rally after Nvidia Corp.’s solid results lifted stocks. That’s despite data showing a contraction in the US economy, which triggered bond gains on bets the Federal Reserve will cut rates twice this year. Traders also parsed a court ruling that blocked some of Donald Trump’s tariffs. Most major industries in the S&P 500 rose, with the gauge up about 1%. The world’s largest chipmaker jumped 5% after soothing investor fears about a China slowdown, saying that the AI computing market is still poised for “exponential growth.” Treasury two-year yields, which are more sensitive to imminent policy moves, dropped three basis points to 3.95%. The dollar fell against all developed-market currencies. Gross domestic product decreased at a 0.2% annualized pace in the first quarter, the second estimate from the Bureau of Economic Analysis showed Thursday. That compared with an initially reported 0.3% decline. The economy’s primary growth engine — consumer spending — advanced 1.2%, compared with an initial estimate of 1.8%. “Historic and more current data brought no surprises,” said Neil Birrell at Premier Miton Investors. “Even if that had been the case, the focus would have remained firmly on the here and now — tariffs, courts, China, Nvidia, yields and equity markets.”  Two of Wall Street’s top investment banks cautioned that the impact of a court ruling striking down many of Trump’s tariff measures may prove limited. Goldman Sachs Group Inc.’s Alec Phillips said “this ruling represents a setback for the administration’s tariff plans and increases uncertainty but might not change the final outcome for most major US trading partners.” “The tariff levels that we had yesterday are probably going to be the tariff levels that we have tomorrow, because there are so many different authorities the administration can reach into to put it back together,” Michael Zezas, Morgan Stanley’s global head of fixed income and thematic research, told Bloomberg Television. The S&P 500 rose 0.8%. The Nasdaq 100 added 1.3%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.2%. The yield on 10-year Treasuries declined three basis points to 4.45%. The Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index lost 0.4%. -------- More on Bloomberg Television and Markets Like this video? Trump Global Tariffs Deemed Illegal, US to Revoke Chinese Student Visas | Bloomberg The Pulse 05/29
The vast majority of President Donald Trump’s global tariffs were deemed illegal and blocked by the US trade court, dealing a major blow to a pillar of his economic agenda. A panel of three judges at the US Court of International Trade in Manhattan issued a unanimous ruling Wednesday which sided with Democratic-led states and small businesses that accused Trump of wrongfully invoking an emergency law to justify the bulk of his levies. The court gave the administration 10 days to “effectuate” its order, but didn’t spell out any steps it must take to unwind the tariffs. Meanwhile the US plans to start “aggressively” revoking visas for Chinese students, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said, escalating the Trump administration’s push for greater scrutiny of foreigners attending American universities. Rubio said in a statement that students affected would include “those with connections to the Chinese Communist Party or studying in critical fields.” The US will also enhance scrutiny “of all future visa applications from the People’s Republic of China and Hong Kong,” he added.
