15 Super Rich Rappers you Didn't know were Jamaican (Number 1 Will Shock You)
Hip hop was not invented in America. It was invented in a Bronx rec room in 1973 by a teenager who had been in the country six years and grew up in Trenchtown, Kingston. Almost nobody says that out loud.
We count down 15 enormously wealthy and influential figures in rap who are Jamaican, or were raised by Jamaicans, and whose island connection you almost certainly never knew about. Some were born on the island. One was deported back to it. One fought the US government for 23 years to avoid being sent to a country he left as a child. And the man at number one built the richest estate in rap history, with a grandmother still living in Trelawny when his mother died.
We also correct things the internet keeps getting wrong. Tyga's Jamaican parent is not the one you have been told. Bobby Shmurda was not born in Brooklyn. The Sean Kingston case did not happen in 2023, and it did not end where most videos say it ended.
WHAT'S COVERED
Safaree Samuels and the identity never hidden
Ski Mask and the father who forced him to write
Bobby Shmurda, East Flatbush, and a life sentence handed down in 1995
Pepa of Salt-N-Pepa, born in Kingston, inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2025
Kardinal Offishall, who performed in front of Nelson Mandela at twelve
Bushwick Bill, born in Kingston, and the record that changed what rappers could say
Pete Rock and the Bronx cricket club where his father spun records
Sean Kingston, grandson of the producer of Burning Spear's Marcus Garvey
Pop Smoke and the bridge he built from London to New York
Tyga and the parent everyone gets wrong
Heavy D, born in Mandeville, first rapper to run a major record label
Slick Rick and a 23 year fight against deportation
XXXTentacion, named after a Bob Marley song by a father deported to Jamaica
Busta Rhymes and the Brooklyn classroom that held three legends
The Notorious B.I.G., whose first released record was Jamaican dancehall
And the 16th name, the one that changes everything
Jamaica is an island of under three million people. It produced the founder of hip hop, the greatest storyteller in rap, the greatest rapper of all time by most reckonings, the first rapper to run a major label and the first female rap group in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Almost none of that value ever came home.
Tell us in the comments: should hip hop formally acknowledge itself as a Jamaican invention, or has it become so American that the origin no longer matters? Pick a side and defend it.

NOTE ON SOURCING
Where sources disagree, we say so on air rather than picking the dramatic version. Reporting differs on which of Pop Smoke's parents is Jamaican, and on the background of Bobby Shmurda's mother. Net worth figures quoted online are press estimates, not audited accounts.
