Are Utah's Beautiful Salt Flats Disappearing? | National Geographic
"For the second year in a row, Speed Week at the Bonneville Salt Flats has been canceled because the salt was either too wet or too muddy. During the annual event, sponsored by the Southern California Timing Association, cars race across Utah's famous salt flats. Races have taken place there for over a hundred years, but the flats need to be dry and stable. Although there's disagreement as to the cause of the altered conditions, a number of factors are believed to be at work, including climate change and the extraction of potassium from the site by commercial mining companies. ➡ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/NatGeoSubscribe About National Geographic: National Geographic is the world's premium destination for science, exploration, and adventure. Why Elephants May Go Extinct in Your Lifetime | National Geographic
Nearly a hundred elephants are slaughtered each day in the wild, most for their ivory tusks. This killing of elephants by humans could wipe out the animals in the wild within a generation. ➡ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/NatGeoSubscribe About National Geographic: National Geographic is the world's premium destination for science, exploration, and adventure. The survey shows that the ivory market is driven by a perceived suitability for gift giving and the social status ivory ownership conveys. Twenty-two percent of respondents across all five countries expressed strong intent to buy ivory. "You want to make purchasing ivory and owning ivory socially unacceptable," says National Geographic Society Chief Science and Exploration Officer Terry Garcia. Likely buyers, on average, tend to fall into the low- to middle-income bracket, skew younger than average, and are somewhat more likely to have a religious affiliation. The September 2015 National Geographic magazine cover story, "Tracking Ivory," features a special investigation by journalist and National Geographic Fellow Bryan Christy, who used fake tusks and hidden GPS devices to expose poachers and the route of the illegal ivory trade. Christy's investigative reporting is also the subject of the National Geographic Channel premiere "Explorer: Warlords of Ivory" on August 30. Giant Ball of Squid Mucus Discovered by Divers | National Geographic
Scuba divers off the coast of Turkey recently encountered a 13-foot-wide (4 meter) mass of clear goo containing millions of eggs, most likely laid by a red flying squid. These egg masses are rarely seen, as they're deep underwater and last for only a few days before the squid babies hatch and the mass disintegrates. Scientists aren't entirely sure how the masses get so big, but they think the giant size allows the eggs to spread out and receive oxygen, while the jellylike substance helps protect the eggs from infection, bacteria, and predators. TIL: From Fleece Jackets to Your Food: The Scary Journey of Microplastics | Today I Learned
National Geographic explorer and grantee Gregg Treinish wants everyone to know about the hidden toxic cost of synthetic fabrics. Tiny, invisible microplastics are entering our waterways straight from our washing machines. About 2,000 synthetic particles are released from washing a single polyester fleece jacket. All clothing items—including cotton and wool—shed micro-fibers when washed, but the natural fibers biodegrade. Synthetic particles don't degrade and can absorb toxins while traveling through the waterways. If they're eaten by small organisms, such as fish, they can bioaccumulate and end up on our dinner plates. ➡ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/NatGeoSubscribe ➡ Watch All Today I Learned Clips here: http://bit.ly/2WatchTodayILearned ➡ Get More TIL (Today I Learned): http://bit.ly/MoreTIL About TIL (Today I Learned): Love crazy facts?
