The Accompong Maroon Festival is celebrated on January 6th every year. Located somewhere in the St. Elizabeth area, the festival is a vibrant invocation of Afro-Caribbean heritage. During the celebration the population grows from 500 to 8,000 and include traditional drumming, storytelling, and dancing. Highlights of the festivities include the traditional march to the legendary ‘kindah tree’ where a special unsalted, unseasoned pork is consumed. In addition to the traditional activities patrons can enjoy carnival rides and a main stage area for the night’s entertainment. The festival also marks the signing of the 1739 peace agreement between Cudjoe, leader of the Maroons, and the British Empire. After the enslaved Maroons managed to free themselves the agreement guaranteed their personal freedom and 15,000 acres of land. Accompong is named after the founder of the village who was to Cudjoe and National Heroine Nanny. In 2020, Accompong celebrates its 282nd anniversary since the treaty. On Wednesday, Jan. 15, NASA astronauts Jessica Meir and Christina Koch will step outside of the International Space Station into the vacuum of space together. The duo will replace old nickel-hydrogen batteries with newer, more powerful lithium-ion batteries to continue upgrading station power systems on the Port-6 truss structure.
