Rescue operations at an artisanal gold mine in the village of Lomera in DR Congo are continuing after a number of shafts collapsed over the weekend. Local reports say an unknown number of miners are trapped underground but the death toll is not yet known. The area is in South Kivu province and has been under the control of M23 rebels since they captured swathes of DR Congo's mineral-rich east earlier this year. Gold was discovered in December and thousands have flocked to the once quiet village to make their fortune. Had a fun filled weekend as we got to experience just a taste of what Tobago has to offer. Our itinerary for the weekend allowed us to experience the warm embrace of the Castara village, inclusive of a Tobago sweet hand for lunch at the Caribbean Kitchen, to the fantastic fusion of local food with an international twist by Chef Xenon Thomas of the Brown Cow restaurant. The weekend's activities all culminated into one event that showcased fashion, fine art, food, music and the performing arts of Tobago and the wider Caribbean at the Leve 2019 event. Leve means "to elevate" and that is exactly what Dr. Auliana Poon and her team at Leve Global are doing by creating a platform to showcase the creative energy of the people of Tobago and elevate the experience of the island through the different facets of tourism with a specific focus on sustainable living throughout the Caribbean. Special thanks to Sherma Mitchell for inviting us to be a part of this experience.
