Discover the complete biblical story of one of Joshua’s most extraordinary battles, the day Israel fought against a powerful coalition of kings and the sun was described as standing still over the land. The story takes place during Israel’s conquest of Canaan. After the people of Gibeon made peace with Joshua through deception, several Amorite kings saw the alliance as a serious threat. Five kings joined forces and marched against Gibeon. The Gibeonites immediately sent word to Joshua, asking for help. Joshua responded. He gathered his fighting men and marched through the night to reach the battlefield. What followed became one of the most dramatic military scenes in the Book of Joshua. Israel launched a sudden attack, and the enemy forces were thrown into confusion. As they fled, the biblical account describes large hailstones falling from the sky, killing more of the enemy than the Israelite soldiers had struck with the sword. But the battle was not over. Joshua needed more time to complete the victory. Then he spoke words that became some of the most famous in the Old Testament. He commanded the sun to stand still over Gibeon and the moon over the Valley of Aijalon. According to the biblical narrative, the daylight was prolonged while Israel continued the battle. The text emphasizes that there had never been a day like it before or after. This moment has generated questions for centuries. What exactly does it mean that the sun stood still?
