A Really Cute & Rare Baby Rhino Born in Sumatra! 🦏
The critically endangered Sumatran rhinoceros, categorized alongside the Javan rhino as the world's most endangered rhino species, was once widespread across Southeast Asia, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar, and the Himalayan foothills in Bhutan. However, today, a viable population is limited to isolated pockets in Indonesia, mainly on Sumatra.
These solitary rhinos sustain themselves on a diet comprising fruit, twigs, leaves, and shrubs, favoring wild mangoes, bamboos, and figs. They exhibit a remarkable sense of smell and sharp hearing, using scented trails to locate each other in the forest.
Sumatran rhinos are active at night, seeking salt licks and engaging in wallowing during the day to prevent skin issues. Proficient swimmers, fast runners, and skillful climbers, they navigate challenging terrains effortlessly. Their communication involves whistling, whining noises, and interactions with their dung.
