Why do male lions have manes? 🦁 First thought for most people would be: for defence! Even Darwin postulated this. But as a study in 2002 showed thats not really the case. When fighting lions tend to go for the rear end. Why would you go for the part with the sharp teeth and claws. But lions try not to risk a fight anyway. And here the mane also helps. It signals how strong and fit a male lion is - like a warning sign “Do not mess with me!” The bigger and darker a mane, the fitter the male. A fact that is also represented in what lionesses find attractive. The colour seems to be especially important here, as is correlates with higher testosterone levels and better nutrition. Also in sexual selection, animals often make sacrifices to appeal to the other sex. Like a peacocks wheel. In lions it is the big and dark mane. The big cats can’t cope very well with heat - the only way is panting or radiating heat over the skin. So a dark mane signals “Yeah I am wearing this fancy scarf in summer, but I can deal with it”. The first asteroid sample collected in space by a U.S. spacecraft and brought to Earth is unveiled to the world at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston on Wednesday, Oct. 11. The science team from NASA’s OSIRIS-REx (Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification and Security – Regolith Explorer) mission will provide results from an initial analysis of the sample, which landed on Sunday, Sept. 24, in the Utah desert.
