Howrah Junction, Kolkata, India is the biggest, busiest, and most vibrant station in one of the fastest-growing cities, in one of the most populous countries of the world.
With a million passengers passing through every day it’s also one of the busiest transport hubs in the world. Its 23 platforms see the arrival and departure of trains nearly every minute of every day.
It’s an architecturally stunning station built at the end of the 19th century and was the wonder of the British Raj with a magnificent setting on the banks of the Hooghly River, running through India’s cultural and artistic capital, also known as “The City of Joy.”
Cameras immerse viewers in the hustle and bustle of Howrah, as station staff deal with the challenges of keeping this massive and complex station up and running and the trains moving on their journeys to every corner of India.

It’s the busiest, grandest and oldest station in not only Australia but in the whole of the southern hemisphere. It first opened in 1854 and within a hundred years grew to be the busiest station in the world surpassing Gare Saint-Lazare in Paris, Grand Central Station in New York, and Liverpool Street Station in London.

Grand Central Station: This 1920s architectural art deco gem, built by rail magnate Cornelius Vanderbilt, is not only one of the busiest stations in North America but with its renowned dining and shopping facilities, including the world-famous Oyster Bar and the Natural Food Market, it’s a destination in its own right and regularly tops the list of the world’s most visited attractions.
It has 44 platforms, more than any other station in the world, and its staff deal with a quarter of a million daily passengers as well as the hundreds of thousands of visitors who pass through the station to marvel at Grand Central's architecture, enjoy the facilities and take selfies in front of the famous concourse art deco Clock.
We patrol with the NYPD as they keep the station safe and secure, follow rail engineers as they maintain the rail and trains for the daily travel frenzy, and talk to platform staff as they deal with the Monday morning rush hour when hundreds of thousands of commuters head into the Big Apple for their daily grind on Wall St and other areas of Manhattan.

Zurich HB sees the arrival and departure of 3000 trains a day, making it the busiest in Europe. It’s renowned throughout the rail world for its efficiency and although it has to deal with the challenges of transporting half a million passengers every day it regularly tops the world table for on-time departures. Zurich HB is such a source of national pride that it’s officially been designated a “Cultural Property of National Significance.”
