For the people living in the remote villages of this region these “ice highways” are of vital importance. The “technical masterwork” was built in the 1950s and 60s, at the time of Yugoslavian President Tito. Abounding in curves, the asphalt road stretches from Ankaran in Slovenia to Ulcinj in Montenegro. More than half of the road is in Croatia (659 km) and a quarter in Montenegro (125 km). Shorter segments lead through Slovenia; only nine kilometers are in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Half a century ago the German Duke Carl von Württemberg purchased a 55.000-hectare parcel of land in the Selkirk Mountains in British Columbia, Canada. He baptized his holdings after his native Black Forest, "Darkwoods", and managed the forests in the lonely region sustainably. Until today the barely accessible mountain ranges are home to rare mountain caribou, grizzly bears, endangered bats, wolves and unique birds. Just a few years ago, the area returned to Canadian ownership – bought by the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC). They want to preserve Darkwoods with its unique flora and fauna, but also want it to be a showcase region of Canada. They get help from Gerry the Stream Keeper, Cory the bat researcher, Adrian the botanist and Leo the caribou scientist. The film takes the viewer into the nearly impassable Darkwoods with its ecosystems of old growth valleys and alpine meadows, and shows its unrivaled nature through the seasons of a year – a wonderful part of Canada, now preserved forever.

Today, most Newfoundlanders live on Avalon. There are particularly many seabirds here. In Witless Bay, the newborn puffins are ready for their first descent into the Atlantic. But some stray onto the coastal road, attracted by the lights of the hotels and restaurants. In doing so, they run the risk of being run over. A team of volunteers saves the lives of countless young birds: The Puffin & Petrel Patrol goes out at night dressed in high-visibility vests to collect the puffins. Biologist Sabrina Wilhelm then brings them back to Green Island, home to the largest puffin colony in North America.
