This cute baby bear is a Tibetan Blue Bear! 🐻 Also known as Ursus arctos pruinosus, this bear has black fur with blue/grey tips, giving it a unique appearance. Found in eastern Tibet, Bhutan, western China, and Nepal, the Tibetan Blue Bear is rare and shy. It is listed on CITES and protected under the Endangered Species Act in the USA. They eat small mammals like pika, possibly livestock, vegetation, and pine nuts. They live around 20-30 years, similar to other brown bears. Despite being one of the least studied bear subspecies, their elusiveness and rarity make them fascinating. One part of this mega-prison complex is Camp Sampaguita - one of the toughest prisons in the world. Designed to hold one thousand five hundred offenders, currently, there are more than eight thousand incarcerated. That means up to ninety hardened criminals crammed into twenty-five square meter cells, half of them sleeping on the bare ground. Hygienic conditions are catastrophic. Despite to staffing problems, each wing is staffed by just two guards per shift. Two guards for more than two thousand prisoners. To keep things in check, they count the prisoners four times a day. Extremely strict rules apply throughout the prison. Anyone who violates them ends up in so-called Bartolina - isolation detention. The maximum stay is four weeks, with no upper limit. Every week, new inmates arrive, making the situation even worse. One of the new arrivals is thirty-five-year-old Rondell. He has been convicted of attempted murder – an unpremeditated act of jealousy. Rondell was living a normal life until two years ago. No gangs, no drugs. Some indigenous populations haven't yet found a way to protect their land and heritage but some have started to fight the windmills. Davi Kopenawa, charismatic leader of the Yanomami people of Brazil, nowadays lives between the worlds. He travels the globe to raise public interest for the threats against the Yanomami people, and on the other hand still lives a chief’s and shaman’s life in the middle of the Brazilian jungle. From the Andaman Islands to South America: a few undisturbed peoples still exist on this planet. They want to be left alone and in peace, which at times is necessary to prevent them from being exposed to illnesses they are not used to, and which could even threaten their lives. Tourism is another great threat nowadays. The wish of many to discover the last mysterious places on Earth might be the final step towards the destruction of the very same. However, the era of untouched populations living unchanged for thousands of years, far away from globalization and Western values, is coming to an end. When those peoples disappear, their languages, cultures, knowledge and unique perspectives will also vanish forever.
