In 2011 the earthquake that struck New Zealand’s South Island became the nation’s fifth-deadliest disaster. Thousands were forced to leave their homes and neighbourhoods were turned into ghost towns. Halfway around the world, in Italy, a country precariously perched on the border between the Eurasian and African Plates, we recall the events of the shocking 2009 L’Aquila earthquake. It reduced a beautiful 13th century city to rubble, killed more than 300 people, and its thousands of aftershocks frayed public and political nerves. Update: In February 2025, the reconstruction was at 78% in L'Aquila city and 88% in terms of construction projects. Going even further back in history, we look at the 1994 earthquake that rocked Los Angeles in the early hours of the morning. Killing 57, injuring thousands more and destroying 112,000 structures, it was little consolation that had the quake hit on a workday the death toll would have been much higher. They flatten entire cities, create mass homelessness, and take thousands of lives. They’re small, cute and rather special – rock hyraxes, also known as dassies. Visitors of the South African coastline marvel at their heart-stopping capers among the rocks, cheerfully ignoring the plunging chasms below. They may look like groundhogs, but their closest taxonomic relatives are actually the elephant and the manatee. And that’s not the only odd thing about them. Dassies are distinctly sociable – in their mostly harmonious family life, of course, but also in squabbles among themselves. Unusually for herbivores, their foraging needs only take up an hour or so of every day, leaving these sun-loving creatures plenty of time left for playing, snuggling or just lounging around. They have some pretty unusual anatomic features too: the irises of their eyes can contract to such an extent that they can look directly at the sun, and the soles of their feet are retractable, which makes them extremely well-suited to climbing around their rocky habitat. And last but not least, the male dassie can sing – at least when he’s courting the lady dassie of his dreams. All in all, they are a peaceful bunch but when cornered, they can be fierce adversaries. This film is about the nature of the coastline in South Africa. Its focus is the world of dassies. We gain insights into their life from birth to adulthood and by following a particularly bold young dassie, we find out more about his family, how they behave and what dangers they face in their daily lives.

Peaks of up to 7000 metres in height, do not only offer an imposing view, but also influence the climate highly by being the drainage and meteorological divide all the same. The land in the spheres of the Andes is full of contrasts, a land of fire and ice, of coldness and heat. In the wet and stormy patagonian South, jagged massifs and glaciers prevail, while volcanos, hot springs, geysers and salt lakes dominate the scenery on the dry highland. On the western side of the range, air enriched with moisture provides for lush, lichen-covered enchanted forests, while the eastern side only receives 10 % of the precipitation which supports only semi-arid areas. Starting in Tierra del Fuego in the very South of the American continent, we travel along the Andes towards the North and climb to heights of more than 5000 metres on the bolivian/peruvian Altiplano. Onward, we follow the course of the water downhill to the east and arrive in the Pantanal, the biggest wetland in the world. The waterfalls of the Rio Iguazu, which is a tributary to the huge Rio Parana, which again drains in the Atlantic Ocean at Buenos Aires, represent the awesome grand finale. The Jamaican rose apple is a fruit that you may not have heard of or have simply forgotten about for a very long time, scientifically called Syzygium Jambos, the rose apple  is originally from Southeast Asia. Like most fruits, it has been given many names by the numerous regions it is found in. Some of the most common names are plum rose, water apple, cloud apple, wax apple, Malay apple, and rose apple as we call it here in Jamaica.
