How Grizzlies Feed Trees with Salmon I Climate Heroes
↠ Check out our Climate Heroes series: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLZ3CjNbCdQe8dN8YtA54vfnkWVejclPhR Each fall in North America, the salmon run sees huge numbers of fish return from the sea to spawn in freshwater. Making their way upstream, they follow the imprinted scent of their birthplace. Along the way are numerous obstacles – including grizzly bears. As the forest giants prepare to hibernate, they eat tons of salmon. The nitrogen-rich leftovers feed smaller mammals but also, amazingly, trees. We examine the fragile balance of this unique relationship. 🔔 For more amazing stories from nature, make sure to subscribe to our channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/TerraMaterOfficial?sub_confirmation=1 Video chapters: 00:00 Grizzlies catching salmon 00:36 The Salmon Journey 02:19 Salmon after spawning 02:29 Grizzlies catching/eating salmon 03:32 Scientists observed a female catching 143kg salmon/8h 03:45 During salmon run bears it only a 1/4 of each fish 04:03 Trees get 80% of their Nitrogen from fish 04:37 Trees grow thicker rings when more salmon arrive 05:35 Grizzly eating salmon 05:44 Check out our "Wild to Know" series! 🖇️ Sources: "Trees Get the Table Scraps from a Fish Dinner" https://www.amnh.org/content/download/189119/2891978/file/namammals_article_6_8.pdf "The Salmon Life Cycle": https://www.nps.gov/olym/learn/nature/the-salmon-life-cycle.htm "Influence of spawning salmon on tree-ring width, isotopic nitrogen, and total nitrogen in old-growth Sitka spruce" "Salmon: A Natural Climate Solution": https://www.nrdc.org/bio/giulia-cs-good-stefani/salmon-natural-climate-solutionhttps://www.researchgate.net/publication/334817739_Influence_of_spawning_salmon_on_tree-ring_width_isotopic_nitrogen_and_total_nitrogen_in_old-growth_Sitka_spruce_from_coastal_British_Columbia "Community Ecology and Conservation of Bear-Salmon Ecosystems" https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fevo.2020.513304/full "Using bears to quantify the importance of salmon to wildlife" https://www.researchgate.net/publication/224050046_Using_Grizzly_Bears_to_Assess_Harvest-Ecosystem_Tradeoffs_in_Salmon_Fisheries "Salmon Trees": https://hakaimagazine.com/features/salmon-trees/ "The biggest trees capture the most carbon: Large trees dominate carbon storage in forests": https://phys.org/news/2020-11-biggest-trees-capture-carbon-large.html #terramatters #salmon #grizzly

Behind Bars: Philippines - CIW: Locked Up Ladies | World’s Toughest Prisons | Free Documentary
Behind Bars Season 3 - Episode 5: Mandaluyong City, CIW: Locked Up Ladies | 4K Prison Documentary Behind Bars: Philippines - New Bilibid Prison: https://youtu.be/HgaZTcJMHdc The "Correctional Institution for Women" is the oldest and largest women's prison in the Philippines, founded in nineteen thirty-one. Designed for one thousand PDLs - "persons deprived of liberty" - today there are about three times as many. Prisoners range from petty criminals to drug dealers, from murderers to gang members. The guards are outnumbered. Your best bet at keeping prisoners under control: Strict rules that everyone must adhere to. Over and over again there are checks, to ensure no one has managed to escape. One hundred percent security is impossible! The inmates are allowed to deal with tools, gas-cannisters and knives. All potentially lethal weapons. "The bedrooms and living quarters, the so-called "dorms", are spread over several buildings. Among the inmates are also so-called ‚High Value‘ PDL's‘. A huge compound, full of hardened criminals. In a jail where just a few dozen correction officers watch over several thousand prisoners, who roam freely during the day. For keeping control, the guards even work together with privileged inmates, that are allowed to punish the other ones. This episode of Behind Bars tells not only his story, but also that of the inmates, and the environment of the prison and shows in impressive pictures how life behind bars works. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Subscribe Free Documentary Channel for free: https://bit.ly/2YJ4XzQ Instagram: https://instagram.com/free.documentary/ Facebook: https://bit.ly/2QfRxbG Twitter: https://bit.ly/2QlwRiI ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ #FreeDocumentary #Documentary #BehindBars ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Free Documentary is dedicated to bringing high-class documentaries to you on YouTube for free.
