Microsoft has begun canceling leases for a substantial amount of datacenter capacity in the US, a move that may reflect concerns about whether it’s building more AI computing than it will need over the long term, TD Cowen said in a report. OpenAI’s biggest backer has voided leases totaling “a couple of hundred megawatts” of capacity, the US brokerage wrote Friday, citing channel checks or inquiries with supply chain providers. Microsoft in a statement on Monday reiterated its spending target for the fiscal year ending June, but declined to comment on TD Cowen’s note. On today's show, The US Treasury Department was hacked by a Chinese state-sponsored actor through a third-party software service provider, according to a letter the agency sent to Congress on Monday. Treasury described the intrusion as a “major cybersecurity incident,” since it was attributed to a state-sponsored actor, according to the letter, which was reviewed by Bloomberg News. Treasury was notified on Dec. 8 by a third-party software provider, BeyondTrust Inc., that a hacker had gained access “to a key used by the vendor to secure a cloud-based service used to remotely provide technical support for Treasury Departmental Offices (DO) end users,” according to the letter.  The department is being assisted by the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, the FBI, the intelligence community and third-party forensic investigators. Based on available information, advanced hackers tied to China were behind the incident, according to the letter. The Chinese embassy in Washington opposes US “smear attacks against China without any factual basis,” it said in an emailed statement. The Russian Federation's team won the event's silver medal with Romania completing the medal winners with bronze. Artistic gymnastics was introduced at the very first Olympic Games in 1896 in Athens, and has been present at every edition of the Games since then. At the beginning, it comprised disciplines that are difficult to qualify as "artistic", such as climbing and acrobatics. The foundations of the Olympic gymnastics programme were laid at the 1924 Games in Paris, when the men's apparatus individual and team competitions appeared. In 1928, women were included in the Amsterdam Games. It was not until 1952 that the women's programme was developed, with seven events, and then stabilised at six events as from the 1960 Games in Rome. Oil rallied to the highest level in five months as a fresh wave of US sanctions against Russia’s energy industry threatened to crimp supplies from one of the world’s top producers. The US imposed its most aggressive and ambitious sanctions yet on Russia’s oil industry on Friday, targeting large exporters, insurance companies and more than 150 tankers. In the UK, the pound extended losses against the dollar, pressured by UK fiscal and economic concerns. But member of the UK House of Lords and former chairman at Goldman Sachs Asset Management Jim O'Neill tells Bloomberg's Francine Lacqua that sterling's moves are because of a strong dollar, not a weak pound. "We have a very strong dollar and the dollar is rising against many, many currencies," O'Neill says. Swimming has featured on the programme of all editions of the Games since 1896. The very first Olympic events were freestyle (crawl) or breaststroke. Backstroke was added in 1904. In the 1940s, breaststrokers discovered that they could go faster by bringing both arms forward over their heads. This practice was immediately forbidden in breaststroke, but gave birth to butterfly, whose first official appearance was at the 1956 Games in Melbourne. This style is now one of the four strokes used in competition. Women's swimming became Olympic in 1912 at the Stockholm Games. Since then, it has been part of every edition of the Games.
