Ann Packer Wins 800m Gold For Great Britain - Tokyo 1964 Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe Classic Olympic Highlights from the Tokyo 1964 Olympic Games as Ann Packer wins the women's 800m gold medal for Great Britain. Despite being a very versatile athlete, at the Tokyo 1964 Games, Ann Packer decided to concentrate her efforts on the 400m and then, almost as an after-thought, entered the 800m, another event in which she had little experience but lots of potential. Packer set a European record in the 400m final, but had to be content with a silver medal behind the Australian Betty Cuthbert, who had sprinted clear and held on, despite Packer closing in the final stages. The British athlete turned now to the longer distance, but was not confident of matching that medal-winning performance. She could finish only fifth in the opening heat, scraping into the next round, and was then third in her semi-final. Feeling tired, and lacking confidence, Packer considered missing the final entirely to go shopping. But she was inspired by her fiancé, athlete Robbie Brightwell, who had finished a disappointing fourth in the men's 400m final and was despondent on missing out on a medal. And so, to cheer him up, Packer decided to race anyway. The race was led from the start by the French athlete Maryvonne Dupureur, who broke away from the pack and held first place for most of its distance. Behind her, though, Packer moved up from eighth, to sixth, to third and then overtook Dupureur with 70 metres to go, holding on to win in a new world record time. "It was so easy, I could not believe I had won," said Packer afterwards. "I knew nothing about the event and that probably helped." It was a triumph that appeared to set up this exceptional athlete for a glittering sporting future. Instead, Packer retired from competition at the age of just 22. She married Robbie - who had won his own medal with a silver in the 4x400m relay - and they had three sons - one became a 400m runner, the other two became professional footballers. USA Share The 4x400m Relay World Record - Seoul 1988 Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe The USA's 4x400m team won gold by running the same time as the world record at the time of the Seoul 1988 Olympic Games, relive this race in these classic Olympic highlights. When the athletics programme came to its conclusion with the traditional relays at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, the United States boasted a formidable record in the event. They had failed to capture gold just twice since 1952; once in the 1980 Moscow boycott, the other in 1972 when two of their nominated athletes were banned from further competition after talking on the victory podium as the Star Spangled Banner was being played. The trio of Steve Lewis, Butch Reynolds and Danny Everett had completed a clean sweep of the medals in the individual event and it seemed that only a baton drop or a technical infringement could stop them. Everett and Lewis led out the quartet and by the time the individual champion handed the baton to Kevin Robinzine the Americans were almost half the final straight clear. Butch Reynolds' lap turned out to be a race against the clock. Reynolds, in his distinctive languid, head-pumping style, extended the lead further and finally crossed the line with the stadium display showing a time of 2mins 56.17secs. It was one hundredth of a second behind the world record which had stood since the Americans stormed to victory in the rarefied air of Mexico City 20 years earlier. Officials shaved off the crucial 100th for the confirmed time and a share of the world record was theirs. Oil Prices at Four-Year Low on Trade War, Surprise OPEC+ Move
Oil sank to a four-year low as an intensifying global trade war threatens to batter energy demand, with a fresh wave of US levies going into effect in a move that will deal a heavy blow to the global economy. The losses have been compounded by a decision by OPEC+ to loosen output curbs at a faster clip than previously expected. Eric Lemming Wins First Olympic Javelin Gold - Stockholm 1912 Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe Javelin made it's Olympic debut at the Stockholm 1912 Olympic Games and it was the hometown boy Eric Lemming who won gold in the event, setting his 10th world record in the event in the process. Eric Lemming was nineteen years old when he set a world record of 49.31m in the javelin throw in 1899. Unfortunately, javelin throw was not included in the Olympic programme in 1900, but Lemming travelled to Paris anyway and took part in six events, placing fourth in the high jump, the pole vault and the hammer throw and eighth in the discus throw. The javelin throw was finally accepted as an Olympic event in 1908, at which time Lemming was still the world record holder. Lemming won the freestyle javelin event (after which it was dropped from the program) and then set another world record (54.825m) in winning the regular javelin event by more than four metres. At the age of 32, Lemming made a final appearance at the 1912 Olympic Games, which were held in his home country of Sweden. Lemming rose to the occasion, earning the gold medal by making the first javelin throw to exceed 60m, a feat that led the appreciative crowd to give him a standing ovation. Later in the Games in Stockholm, he placed fourth in a one-time event in which the competitors threw the javelin with each hand, and he competed in a similar event with the discus. During his career, Lemming set ten javelin world records, culminating in a 1912 post-Olympic throw of 62.32m. Loukola Beats The Legendary Paavo Nurmi To Steeplechase Gold - Amsterdam 1928 Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe Toivo Loukola of Finland defeats the great Paavo Nurmi to win gold in the 3000m steeplechase event at the Amsterdam 1928 Olympic Games. It says everything about the balance power in the distance running events at the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam that four of the nine finalists in the men's 3,000m steeplechase were from Finland. Led by the legendary Paavo Nurmi, Finnish runners were the dominant force at the Amsterdam Games and he was expected to add to his bulging haul of gold. Nurmi had won five gold medals at the Paris Games four years earlier but was absent from the 10,000m after Finnish officials said he was competing in too many events. However in Amsterdam his programme was curtailed and he opened his campaign by winning the 10,000m in an Olympic record time, eight years after first winning the event in Antwerp. When the heats of the steeplechase came round a week later, Nurmi was again expected to prevail but a spectacular fall nearly put paid to his chances. He was helped up from his fall by Lucien Duquesne and in return Nurmi paced the remainder of the race to help the Frenchman qualify. Team-mate Toivo Loukola, who had once been declared unfit for military service by the Finnish army because of breathing problems, qualified some 20 seconds faster than Nurmi and lined up with a cavalry charge of Finnish team mates. He controlled the race from the very beginning and although Nurmi kept in touch for much of the race he applied the pressure in the closing 800m -- often taking off and landing on the same foot. His time of nine minutes 21.8secs was a new world record, finishing some 10 seconds clear of Nurmi and Over Andersen who completed a Finnish clean sweep in third. The road race at the Tokyo Games was already predicted to be a closely-bunched finish, because the 24km circuit was not believed to be arduous. And so it proved, with most of the riders still in contention for a medal as the race entered its eighth and final lap. The peloton had not been broken. There were attempts from various riders to forge a breakaway, including one from the sport's upcoming star, the Belgian teenager Eddie Merckx, but none succeeded. Merckx only managed to generate a gap of around 25m before he was caught by the pack. And so, as they headed towards the finishing line, the gold medal really was up for grabs. The cyclists had been on the road for nearly 200km now, but it was clear that victory would go to whoever of them was able to produce a sprint when it really counted. The stage was set for a truly spectacular finish. As the finishing line approached, one rider nosed ahead from the pack. There were probably only 20m or 30m to go when Mario Zanin, a mechanic from Treviso in Italy, took the lead, but he did so at the most important moment. As the field swept across the line, it was his front wheel that - just - reached the line first. That was the margin of victory - Zanin's front wheel. Behind him, the placings were proving difficult to decide. Kjell Akerstrom Rodian of Denmark had clearly taken silver, just 0.02secs behind, but after that many cyclists were almost impossible to separate. The blanket nature of the finish made it incredibly difficult to divide rider from rider. Eventually Walter Godefroot, Merckx's Belgian teammate, was awarded silver, 0.11secs behind Zanin. The same time was awarded to the next 25 finishers. The Iranian athlete Sayed Esmail Hosseini, who finished just 0.2secs behind Zanin, was classified in 99th position, despite being less than a tenth of a second away from the podium. It was to be 24-year-old Zanin's only Olympic Games, but he will always be remembered as the man who fought through one of the closest mass finishes in Olympic history.
