30,000 Pounds of Mamey! Inside an Amazing Florida Mamey Grove
In this video, we're talking all about mamey sapote, one of my favorite tropical fruits to grow and eat in South Florida! I'll show you my own mamey trees, how to tell when a mamey is ready to pick, different mamey varieties, and an incredible 5-acre Florida mamey grove with an estimated 30,000 pounds of fruit!
You'll see popular varieties including Key West (Pantin), Magana, Pace, Lorito, Viejo, and the dwarf Pumpkin mamey. I also taste the Pumpkin mamey for the first time and show why this smaller-growing variety could be interesting for backyard growers.
We also visit Dustin from D's Fruit Trees at his newly acquired mamey grove in Homestead, Florida. He explains his plans for the property, how much mamey they're harvesting, and why these mature tropical fruit trees are so valuable.
In this video you'll learn:
• How to tell when mamey sapote is ready to pick
• Why you scratch a mamey before harvesting it
• How long mamey fruit can remain on the tree
• Why mamey trees need plenty of growing space
• Key West/Pantin vs. Magana and other mamey varieties
• Why mamey freezes so well
• What a commercial mamey grove looks like
• How much fruit mature mamey trees can produce
• Whether the dwarf Pumpkin mamey is worth growing
• Tips for growing mamey sapote in South Florida
If you're growing mamey sapote in Florida or thinking about adding one to your tropical fruit collection, this video gives you a look at everything from backyard trees to a full commercial grove.
