Schnabel 'Comfortable' with ECB rate Hike Bets, Traders Await Fed Decision | The Opening Trade 12/8
European Central Bank Executive Board member Isabel Schnabel said she’d be willing to take over as president when Christine Lagarde’s term ends in less than two years. Europe led declines in global bonds and German benchmark borrowing costs rose to the highest since March after Schnabel became the first senior official to suggest with any certainty that European rates have reached a floor. The Federal Reserve is expected to deliver a third consecutive interest-rate cut this week, but Chair Jerome Powell’s challenge in getting his colleagues to support that move portends the difficult tests that lay ahead for his successor. US futures drifted after recent economic readings and comments from officials suggested Wednesday’s Federal Reserve rate decision is unlikely to be unanimous. At least three Fed policymakers are expected to dissent at the last Fed gathering of the year. The Opening Trade has everything you need to know as markets open across Europe. With analysis you won't find anywhere else, we break down the biggest stories of the day and speak to top guests who have skin in the game. Hosted by Anna Edwards and Guy Johnson. ECB's Schnabel 'Comfortable' With Rate Hike Bets, China to Boost Domestic Demand | The Pulse 12/8
ECB Executive Board member Isabel Schnabel suggests interest rates have reached the bottom, saying she's comfortable with bets that the next rate move will be a hike. Schnabel is the first policymaker to declare with any certainty that borrowing costs aren’t simply in a “good place” — as President Christine Lagarde and others have repeatedly said — but have reached a floor. China's top leaders have made boosting domestic demand their top priority for 2026, as they seek to protect the economy from global trade. The Communist party's decision-making Politburo has also hinted at a measured approach to stimulus. They say they will keep their “proactive” fiscal and “moderately loose” monetary stances in play. Plus Ukraine's President heads to London where Prime Minister Keir Starmer is hosting European leaders, as they seek to steer US-led peace talks. Over the weekend, US President Donald Trump said he was disappointed in the way Volodymyr Zelenskiy had handled Washington's proposal to end the war. China Targets Domestic Demand; Trade Surplus Tops $1 Trillion
China’s annual trade surplus exceeded $1 trillion for the first time despite a plunge in shipments to the US. Exports rose 5.9% from a year earlier and outpaced a 1.9% gain in imports, according to data published by China’s General Administration of Customs. Meanwhile, the Communist Party’s decision-making Politburo made strengthening domestic demand its top economic priority for 2026, hinting at a measured approach to stimulus. Netflix-Warner Deal May Pose Problem, Trump Warns
US President Donald Trump raised potential antitrust concerns around Netflix’s planned $72 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. The transaction would combine the world’s No. 1 streaming player with HBO Max and the Justice Department’s antitrust division could argue that the deal is illegal because the combined market share would put Netflix well over a 30% threshold. Lawmakers have already faulted the transaction as harmful to consumers. Bloomberg's Manuel Baigorri breaks down the situation. -------- More on Bloomberg Television and Markets Like this video?
