Aboard the International Space Station, external and crew-tended cameras captured new views of Hurricane Katia and Tropical Storm Nate on September 9, 2011. The video of strengthening Tropical Storm Nate from 230 miles above the Earth was acquired at 10:46 a.m. Eastern time as the system began a slow, drifting northwestward motion over the Bay of Campeche in the southern Gulf of Mexico with winds of 65 miles an hour. Nate was expected to strengthen into a hurricane by September 10 before moving west or southwest to make landfall along the south central Mexican coastline. The view of Katia was recorded a few minutes later at 10:54 a.m. Eastern time as the hurricane sped northeastward over the open Atlantic with winds of 85 miles an hour, posing no threat to the United States.

The Luangwa Valley in Zambia is one of the last remaining strongholds for lions in Africa, and 2016 National Geographic Emerging Explorer Thandiwe Mweetwa plans to do everything she can to keep it that way. After losing both her parents as a young girl, Mweetwa left her small town in southern Zambia to live with her uncle in a rural area in the north that had no running water or electricity. While the transition was difficult, it was integral to the direction in which she would choose to take her career. For the first time in her life, Mweetwa was able to stand in the presence of baboons, vervet monkeys, and other wildlife that she had only ever seen on TV. These horses aren't taking a dip in the water just to cool off in the sweltering Virginia summer. They're the famous Chincoteague ponies of Assateague Island, and they're herded across the channel to Chincoteague Island every July by "saltwater cowboys." Most of the foals are auctioned off the next day to raise money for the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company, which owns and manages the herd under a permit from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. A few foals designated as "buybacks" are donated to the fire company and returned to Assateague Island to replenish the herd and live in the wild for another year.
