Do not be fooled by its adorable name—the cookiecutter shark is the only parasitic shark in the animal kingdom. It lures its prey with glowing, bioluminescent photophores that mimic smaller fish. When animals like dolphins, whales, marlin, and tuna approach the glowing lights to attack, the cookiecutter shark springs into action. It turns around, suctions its lips onto the flesh of its victim, and spins, ejecting a cylindrical plug of flesh from its prey! These characteristic wounds have been found on many different marine mammals and fish, and even a few humans. But don't worry—unless you find yourself in the deep ocean in the middle of the night, you will most likely never encounter one. Pen Pal Experiment: Two Women Swap the Data of Their Daily Lives | Short Film Showcase
In today’s modern digital age, human beings have more ways to connect with one another than ever before. When information designers Giorgia Lupi and Stefanie Posavec agreed to correspond with each other from across the ocean, they chose an unusual method by which to communicate—the language of data and datavisualization. Their project, Dear Data, blends together the traditional pen pal relationship with the modern practice of data collection. Using hand-drawn infographic postcards to communicate, the two women examined how data can reveal aspects about themselves and the world around them. ➡ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/NatGeoSubscribe ➡ Get More Short Film Showcase: http://bit.ly/ShortFilmShowcase About Short Film Showcase: The Short Film Showcase spotlights exceptional short videos created by filmmakers from around the web and selected by National Geographic editors.
