Most spacecraft try to avoid the Van Allen Belts, two doughnut-shaped regions around Earth filled with "killer electrons." This morning NASA launched two heavily-shielded spacecraft directly into the belts. The Radiation Belt Storm Probes are on a two-year mission to study the Van Allen Belts and to unravel the mystery of their unpredictability.

When Donald Trump returned to the White House in 2025, his administration rapidly dismantled much of the US foreign aid system, slashing billions of dollars in assistance to the developing world. The cuts forced some HIV clinics to scale back services, disrupted vaccination and disease-monitoring programs and left refugee agencies scrambling to replace lost funding. Studies estimate hundreds of thousands more lives have been lost as a result of the US cuts, with millions more at risk in the coming years. In the aftermath of that shift, the US has sealed more than 30 new “America First” deals with recipient countries that, in a sharp break from historical US practices, require mineral and health data access in exchange for aid. Mozambique signed a five-year, $1.8 billion agreement that is to support HIV and malaria programs while requiring the country sharply increase domestic health spending. The southern African country previously received between $500 million and $800 million annually from the US — meaning the new agreement represents a significant reduction even before inflation and rising disease burdens are considered. The shuttering of USAID, and the deals that have replaced it, raises questions of how countries will face the realities of propping up fragile health systems while handling future shocks, including the expanding Ebola outbreak in eastern Africa. NASA's Radiation Belt Storm Probes (RBSP), the first twin-spacecraft mission designed to explore our planet's radiation belts, launched into the predawn skies at 4:05a.m. EDT Thursday from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla. The two satellites, each weighing just less than 1,500 pounds, comprise the first dual-spacecraft mission specifically created to investigate this hazardous regions of near-Earth space, known as the radiation belts. These two belts, named for their discoverer, James Van Allen, encircle the planet and are filled with highly charged particles. The belts are affected by solar storms and coronal mass ejections and sometimes swell dramatically. When this occurs, they can pose dangers to communications, GPS satellites and human spaceflight. The hardy RBSP satellites will spend the next 2 years looping through every part of both Van Allen belts. By having two spacecraft in different regions of the belts at the same time, scientists finally will be able to gather data from within the belts themselves, learning how they change over space and time. Designers fortified RBSP with special protective plating and rugged electronics to operate and survive within this punishing region of space that other spacecraft avoid. In addition, a space weather broadcast will transmit selected data from those instruments around the clock, giving researchers a check on current conditions near Earth.

Without food, water, or proper equipment,Mira ran through hail and rain for more than 31 miles to win her first race. Shaped by the tough demands of her life in the mountains, Mira’s natural ability is propelling her to become one of the best ultrarunners in the world today.
