This documentary features sharks in a different light as explained by the researcher known for his unconventional views - Shark Behaviorist Erich Ritter. Ritter's approach to shark research involved close encounters and interactions, sometimes challenging traditional views on shark behavior and safety. He founded SharkSchool in 1996, emphasizing education and safe human-shark interactions. He argued against the common theories that sharks mistake humans for seals or are attracted by blood, and he developed ADORE-SANE, a framework for guiding human-shark interactions.
Erich Ritter was the victim of a bull shark attack in the Bahamas in 2002 while filming for Discovery Channel's Shark Week. The incident, where a bull shark bit his calf, was captured on camera. Ritter survived the attack, which resulted in the loss of part of his left calf and significant blood loss, but continued his work with sharks.
Erich Ritter died, aged 61, in August 2020, shortly after this documentary was completed, of a heart condition. His work and vision remain.
