While exploring the deep sea northeast of Hawaii’s Necker Island with a remotely operated vehicle, scientists aboard the NOAA ship Okeanos Explorer were surprised to encounter what may be a never-before-seen octopus. Though the February 27 discovery was made at a depth of 4,290 meters (14,075 feet), the octopus belongs to a group of octopods that have not previously been observed at depths greater than 4,000 meters (13,123 feet). National Geographic Young Explorer and wildlife photographer Nansen Weber has been going to the same party for 16 years and it never gets old. Each summer for about a month, thousands of beluga whales congregate in Cunningham Inlet, a part of Canada's Somerset Island. "Basically it's just a big party, a socializing thing. There’s been speculations that the whales go there to molt their skin, to get rid of parasites, that it's a nursery for the young whales, but ... you can definitely see it on their face—they're having a good time. While researching pygmy blue whales in the South Taranaki Bight region of New Zealand, Leigh Torres used a drone to capture footage of a baby blue whale nursing. Torres, a National Geographic Society/Waitt grantee, hopes her research will lead to strategies that will help protect the blue whale population in the bight, which is open to oil and gas development.
