The video shows the tiger pinned by an excavator, which the forestry department says has been used for safety reasons in operations involving the capture of other man-eating tigers. Wildlife advocates have questioned whether the tiger died as a result of injuries from apparently being crushed by the excavator. A wildlife expert told The Times of India under the condition of anonymity: "Even if the forest department felt it necessary to use an earthmover to scare the tiger, what was the need to crush the animal under it? It had already been tranquilized.” The forestry department says the animal died from injuries sustained in encounters with other tigers, but an investigation is underway. Billionaire Bill Ackman’s IPO of his closed-end fund and his alternative asset management company is expected to raise about $5 billion, according to people familiar with the matter, the low end of the targeted fundraising range. The deal is expected to to stop taking orders at 4 p.m. New York time on Monday and to price on April 28 as scheduled, the people said. The IPO was targeting as much as $10 billion, according to an earlier statement. Marlow, a geobiologist, analyzes sediment from the ocean floor that contains secrets to forces that are shaping our planet. Around the ocean’s many seeps of methane gas live colonies of microbes that feed on the methane. The gas is a significant contributor to the greenhouse effect. Observing the interaction between the tiny life forms and their unusual food source adds to the understanding of natural climate factors. Past surveys have been based only on breeding pairs, so the increase could be attributed at least partly to counting non-breeding penguins, which tend to be out foraging at sea. While the news of the large Adélie population may be cause for celebration, scientists warn that shrinking ice and warming waters could threaten penguin habitat and prey availability in the long term. Mishal Husain, Host of 'The Mishal Husain Show,' discusses the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ dinner and how the heightened security risk might impact King Charles' state visit this week. King Charles III’s mother, Queen Elizabeth II, lived to the ripe old age of 96, giving the UK public a lot of time to consider how her son would perform as monarch. A common concern, for many years, was that Charles would be too political for the throne. A man of strong opinions, he championed environmental causes and intervened in areas such as architecture. Yet as king, Charles has become a highly-disciplined monarch adept at speaking only when necessary, a master of subtlety. Today, as he arrives in Washington to meet with Donald Trump, he’ll require those skills turned up to the max, with UK-US relations at their lowest ebb in decades and the president having just escaped another attempted shooting. Charles’ four-day visit includes a bilateral meeting with Trump, a White House banquet and a speech to a joint session of Congress. The president is a fan of the king — a “fantastic man” — and has suggested the pomp and ceremony may be a chance to mend relations. The king is supposed to be strictly apolitical, but is likely to try to nudge his fellow head of state in a more amiable direction. When Trump visited Britain last year, Charles gave a pretty obvious nod to White House policy when he said that “we and our allies stand together in support of Ukraine” during a set-piece speech to a room full of the US administration’s most senior officials. China has decided to block Meta Platforms Inc.’s $2 billion acquisition of agentic AI startup Manus, a surprise move to unwind a controversial deal that’s drawn fire for the leakage of technology to the US. The National Development and Reform Commission ordered the deal’s cancellation in a brief statement Monday. The powerful state planner said in a one-line notice that it’s decided to prohibit foreign investment in the startup in accordance with laws and regulations, without elaborating. The ruling is likely to send a chill through China’s burgeoning AI sector, and emerged weeks before a high-profile summit between US President Donald Trump and China’s Xi Jinping. Beijing has tightened scrutiny of key industry firms in the wake of the deal, which has largely been completed. The sale was initially hailed as a template for startups with global aspirations, but domestic critics have since lamented the loss of valuable technology to a geopolitical rival. Manus’s founders got their start in China but relocated their headquarters and key staff to Singapore in 2025. It wasn’t clear when the deal was announced in December whether Beijing would exert its authority on a transaction that technically took place beyond its borders. “The Manus block is a clarifying moment,” said Ke Yan, a tech analyst with DZT Research based in Singapore. “Manus was Singapore-incorporated with founders based here, and it still got pulled back. Beijing’s signal is that what matters isn’t where the legal entity sits.” The decree on Manus may deal a setback to Meta as it looks to compete in AI against rivals from Microsoft Corp. and Alphabet Inc.’s Google to OpenAI and Anthropic PBC. Across social media, influencers are hawking Chinese car brands like BYD, Xiaomi and Zeekr with luxury features, state-of-the-art tech and affordable prices. But they’re forbidden fruit for inflation-weary Americans who can’t have them just yet. The US imposed a 100% tariff on Chinese electric vehicles in 2024, and followed up with a ban on imports of cars with software and hardware made by rivals like China and Russia, citing national security. That’s frustrating for Americans who’ve seen the average new-car price rise 26% since 2020 to almost $49,353 in February. Used-car prices have climbed, too, to $25,533 on average in January.
