Why These Tiny Ocean Creatures Are Eating Plastic | National Geographic
When plastic trash degrades in the ocean, it doesn't just go away: It becomes countless tiny particles, and little creatures called larvaceans sweep it up--and into the food chain. ➡ Subscribe: https://on.natgeo.com/4p5A0D6 About National Geographic: National Geographic is the world's premium destination for science, exploration, and adventure. And it's even making its way to the seafloor. National Geographic Explorer Kakani Katija of the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute has led a study into the feeding habits of larvaceans, creatures that make up part of the ocean's plankton. They take in large amounts of water, passing it through a filter to catch tiny particles of food. But they're also catching 'microplastics,' tiny bits of garbage, and sending it with their waste to the ocean depths. The public utility Northern Ireland Water is working to get people a little more sewer-conscious by preventing one nasty menace, known as 'fatbergs.' These masses of solidified fat, oil, and grease clog up a sewer like cholesterol in an artery. When the resulting mass attaches to sewer walls, it can take some serious shoveling, hacking, vacuuming, and flushing to dislodge. Foreign objects, including supposedly 'flushable' toilet wipes, also help the fatbergs to grow. This recent footage from an extraction in Belfast shows just how hard it is to remove fatbergs once they've congealed. Evelyn Farkas: Iran's Nuclear Program is the "Number One Problem"
The US is waiting on Iran to respond to its proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end a war that’s killed thousands of people, with tensions still high in both the Persian Gulf and in Lebanon. Iran’s leaders are yet to indicate whether they’ll accept the terms of the deal, though they’ve previously shown little sign of yielding on their nuclear program and accepting a moratorium on enriching uranium, both top US demands. This comes amid Wall Street Journal reports that the US is seeking to restart the Hormuz mission as early as this week, and that Saudi Arabia and Kuwait are lifting curbs on US military access to bases. Evelyn Farkas is Executive Director of the McCain Institute and Former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Russia, Ukraine, and Eurasia. She speaks with Bloomberg's Kailey Leinz on Balance of Power. -------- Watch Bloomberg Radio LIVE on YouTube Weekdays 7am-6pm ET Saturday & Sunday 7am-10am ET WATCH HERE: http://bit.ly/3vTiACF Follow us on X: https://twitter.com/BloombergRadio Subscribe to our Podcasts: Bloomberg Daybreak: http://bit.ly/3DWYoAN Bloomberg Surveillance: http://bit.ly/3OPtReI Bloomberg Intelligence: http://bit.ly/3YrBfOi Balance of Power: http://bit.ly/3OO8eLC Bloomberg Businessweek: http://bit.ly/3IPl60i Listen on Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with the Bloomberg Business app: Apple CarPlay: https://apple.co/486mghI Android Auto: https://bit.ly/49benZy Visit our YouTube channels: Bloomberg Podcasts: https://www.youtube.com/bloombergpodcasts Bloomberg Television: https://www.youtube.com/@markets Bloomberg Originals: https://www.youtube.com/bloomberg Quicktake: https://www.youtube.com/@BloombergQuicktake

Oil Prices Whipsaw as US-Iran try to work out deal to end war
Oil dipped in a volatile session as the US waited on Iran’s response to its proposal to end the war and reopen the vital Strait of Hormuz. West Texas Intermediate crude futures briefly dipped as much as 5.5% to trade below $90 a barrel before paring most losses amid signs that Iran continues to assert its control of the crucial oil and natural gas transit route. Prices slumped 8% on Wednesday with renewed hope that the conflict, which has sparked a global energy crisis, might soon come to an end.   US President Donald Trump is seeking an exit from the war, which has sent oil prices soaring and could damage the Republican Party’s political standing ahead of the fall midterm elections. The ongoing closure of Hormuz has been a major sticking point, and leveraging tool, between Tehran and Washington. The US has presented a one-page memorandum of understanding that will potentially lead to the gradual reopening of Hormuz, a person familiar with the matter previously said. Iran is expected to send a response via Pakistan, acting as a mediator, in the next two days. The country’s leaders are yet to indicate whether they’ll accept the terms.
