On March 18, resident Eliud Njoroge Mbugua and his wife noticed a crack in their floor. Within days, the house collapsed and was demolished, leaving Mbugua to salvage the remains. Seismic activity, coupled with heavy rain, led to the rapid split. The rainy season hit Kenya especially hard in mid-March, destabilizing the ash from a nearby volcano that had filled in the fissure. The volcanic soil is more easily washed away than the surrounding earth. As geologist David Adede explains, the crack reveals seismic instability. From the surface, the fault line’s exact location was indiscernible, until it was too late. A destination for mountain climbers since at least the 16th century, the summit became accessible for casual visitors in 1889, when the Pilatus-Bahn began operation. The railway runs between the town of Alpnachstad and Pilatus Kulm, the peak—a trip of less than three miles. But what made it noteworthy then—and now—is its steep ascent. The maximum grade is 25.6 degrees, or 48 percent, meaning it gains 48 feet in elevation for every 100 feet due forward, disregarding incline. That's far steeper than any conventional railroad. Hence its very particular record: the world's steepest cogwheel railway. Each lasting at least three weeks, the canoeing trips became a ritual that brought friendship and meaning into their lives. In this short film by The Muir Project, the two septuagenarians reflect on a life of exploration while embarking on a trip to the wilderness of Alaska’s Brooks Range. 35 years after their first visit to the Noatak River, the two men retrace their journey and look to the adventures that lie ahead. “I have so many things I want to do, it would take a whole lifetime to do them,” Taylor shares. “And then, that probably wouldn’t be long enough.” ➡ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/NatGeoSubscribe ➡ Get More Short Film Showcase: http://bit.ly/ShortFilmShowcase About Short Film Showcase: The Short Film Showcase spotlights exceptional short videos created by filmmakers from around the web and selected by National Geographic editors.
