Meet Kari. Now meet the other Kari. One played college lacrosse in the 1980s; the other currently plays at the same school for the same coach. College sports have radically evolved during that time—take the high-tech clothes that emit infrared radiation to maximize performance—but there’s one constant: Title IX of the Higher Education Act ensures that no person is excluded from university programs “on the basis of sex.” In collaboration with ESPN and The Walt Disney Company, we examine how Title IX continues to ripple across American society. ➡ Subscribe: https://on.natgeo.com/4p5A0D6 ➡ Get more of Overheard at National Geographic here: https://bit.ly/OverheardPodcast ➡ Catch up on all episodes of Overheard at National Geographic: https://on.natgeo.com/3n9D3cF You can also listen to the Overheard at National Geographic podcast on these platforms: ➡ Apple: https://bit.ly/OverheardOnApple ➡ Spotify: https://bit.ly/OverheardOnSpotify ➡ Stitcher: https://bit.ly/OverheardOnStitcher ➡ Google Podcasts: https://bit.ly/OverheardOnGoogle ➡ iHeart Radio: https://bit.ly/OverheardOniHeart ➡ Castbox: https://bit.ly/OverheardOnCastbox #NationalGeographic #Overheard #Podcast About Overheard at National Geographic: Documenting democracy, Untwisting the world’s largest tornado. Poverty in the UK: Forgotten by the Crown
Here's the revised text: Welcome to the paradoxical world of England. Despite boasting a historically low unemployment rate of 3.6%, the specter of poverty looms large, affecting over 15 million Britons—that's nearly a quarter of the population! Rampant inflation and surging energy costs in recent months have thrust millions into the throes of poverty. The situation is further exacerbated by the hyper-flexibility of wages and the increasing trend of uberization among hundreds of thousands of self-employed individuals. Add to this the impact of over a decade of severe cuts in social assistance, initiated during David Cameron's government, coupled with a state disengagement from public services. As a consequence, the United Kingdom, which only had a handful of food banks in 2010, now grapples with over 2,000. Life expectancy is stagnating, even plummeting in the most disadvantaged regions, where residents succumb to the grim realities of the "shit life syndrome"—a lethal blend of multiple pathologies and addictions resulting in premature death, a stark contrast to other regions where people live a decade longer. In response to the government's shortcomings, millions of Britons have embraced voluntary work to survive. This marks the rise of the "Big Society," a concept championed in 2010 by then-Prime Minister David Cameron—the very architect of the austerity policy! Embark on a journey with us as we delve into the lives of England's working poor, individuals grappling with the challenges of relying on solidarity for survival. From the poverty-stricken seaside town of Blackpool in the north-west to the rural county of Cumbria on the Scottish border—where public services and transport have nearly disappeared—to Ashton-under-Lyne, a factory town paralyzed by the absence of economic prospects, witness the reality of contemporary Great Britain. SpaceX Draws $89 Billion Demand for Debut Bond Offering
SpaceX has drawn about $89 billion of demand for its debut US bond sale, according to people with knowledge of the matter, setting the stage for one of the biggest deals in the US investment-grade market this year. Elon Musk’s rocket, satellite and AI conglomerate is seeking to raise between $20 billion and $25 billion from the five-tranche offering in a deal that’s expected to price on Tuesday. At the lower of that range, demand would exceed the bond size by more than four times. Debt investors, who tend to be more conservative than those in the equity market, are betting on Musk’s ability to deliver on his promises even as the company is projected to burn significant amounts of cash over the next few years. Cyber Siege: Unmasking China's Assault on Global Networks
When Microsoft pointed fingers at 'state-backed' Chinese hackers infiltrating its servers, targeting a minimum of 60,000 global users, the revelation hardly came as a shock. It marked just another instance in the ongoing saga of Chinese cyberattacks. Mounting security apprehensions related to China have led to the banning or restriction of Huawei from 5G networks in several countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia. FBI Director James Comey asserted in 2014, 'There are two types of big companies: those that have been hacked by the Chinese, and those that don’t know they have been hacked by the Chinese.' China boasts the world's largest surveillance network, utilizing technology for minority suppression, content censorship, and dissident surveillance. For decades, Western leaders held onto the belief that China's economic growth posed no threat to other nations. The hope was that China would confine its actions within its borders and, as the country embraced capitalism, also lean towards liberalism. Today, that optimism lies shattered. China consistently ranks as the primary source of cyberattacks. A fierce competition is underway for global technology leadership, with 5G networks deemed crucial for future development. Few companies are as strategically positioned to spearhead the 5G revolution as Huawei. However, the looming question persists: to what extent should Huawei be perceived as a threat? We delve into perspectives from key officials in America, Europe, and China.
