When Islamist militants captured Timbuktu and banned secular music, the members of Songhoy Blues felt they had no choice but to leave their homes in the north and head south to the Malian capital, Bamako. They were traumatised by having to leave behind loved ones, but they also had some luck. British musician Damon Albarn and his Africa Express collective went to Mali in a gesture of solidarity, and Songhoy Blues was one of the bands they recorded for their Maison des Jeunes album. As a result, the desert band's international career has taken off and they have played at several European festivals.

Leading weight loss companies happily confront dieters with the scientifically backed claim that failing a diet would be their own fault. After all, world-renowned experts of all fields have proven the effectiveness of weight loss programs. Or have they? On their journey through Germany and France, Diana Löbl and Peter Onnecken investigate how the weight loss industry systematically buy scientific research and use it in their favor. Time and time again, dubious studies are being published and serve only one purpose: fuelling the multi-billion euro weight loss industry. German experts point the finger at a cartel of nutritionists who recommend questionable weight loss diets and promise healthy results based on questionable short-term studies. Similar results cannot be detected in long-term studies. And yet these studies find their way into well-respected publications and subsequently motivate physicians to prescribe those diets to their patients. The man who first identified the Ebola virus back in the 70s, Professor Peter Piot, has told the BBC that it took 1000 Africans to die and two Americans to be repatriated before a public health emergency was declared. In an interview with the TV programme HARDtalk which will be broadcast on Friday, he also commented on the first diagnosis of a case outside Africa. "This is going to happen again. That’s why it’s so vital that in West Africa we bring this epidemic under control. Because otherwise it will be a continuous source of infection for any other country in the world," he said.

Together with artist Lindsay Pollock, he created this animation about Almaz, a young girl who left Ethiopia to travel to work in Saudi Arabia and was used as a domestic slave.
