On February 26, 1993, in New York, the World Trade Center parking lot was the scene of an explosion that claimed the lives of 6 people and injured thousands more. The detonation caused a 5-storey-high breach in the building. On examining the site, police discovered the twisted fender of a rental van among the rubble. A search led FBI agents to determine where the van had come from and who had rented it. Only 6 days after the attack, they arrest suspects. The FBI's forensic laboratory played a decisive role in this case, proving that the chemicals found in the suspects' home and office produced fumes identical to those caused by the detonation. In recent years, as a result of crime and violence in Downtown Kingston and Cross Roads, Half Way Tree has overtaken these areas as the central hub of the capital, Kingston and, perhaps, the busiest thoroughfare in the city. The area has become a popular location to do business in Kingston because of its central location and close proximity to Downtown Kingston, the New Kingston Business District as well as it being the transportation of hub of Kingston. The National Works Agency, for example, estimates that approximately 250,000 commute through the Half Way Tree area on a daily basis from Monday through Saturdays.
