Lord David Burghley Claims Olympic Hurdles Title - Amsterdam 1928 Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe In Amsterdam 1928, David Burghley was eliminated in the early stages of the 100m hurdles but it was in the longer event that he would seal his place in history. Relive Burghley amazing performance later in the Games in these classic Olympic highlights. American hurdlers had won every event since its inception at the Games in 1900, and Burghley ran a measured campaign. He qualified for the final third fastest in his semi, and in the race for gold he ran a superbly measured race. With Americans Frank Cuhel and Morgan Taylor the favourites, Burghley executed the perfect race. While the Americans, Cuhel in particular, were struggling with their stride patters as the race entered its final third, Burghley looked the model of control. With 60 metres to go he was level with Cuhel and looking across the cinder track at Cuhel he did just enough to win and secure the gold medal. It was a hugely popular win for a tremendously likable character. He was hoisted onto the shoulders of his fellow athletes. Wilma Rudolph was the 20th of 22 children. As a young child she was paralysed by polio, and contracted both scarlet fever and double pneumonia. Eight years later she was an Olympic champion. Rudolph made her Olympic debut at the 1956 Melbourne Games. Aged just 16, she was a member of the American 4x100m relay team that claimed a bronze medal. The 1960 Rome Games provided the defining moments of Rudolph's extraordinary life story. Dick Fosbury Changes The High Jump Forever - Fosbury Flop- Mexico 1968 Olympics
📺 Re-live ALL the incredible #Paris2024 action ➡️ https://go.olympics.com/watch 📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe One of the most memorable and historic moments in Olympic history as Dick Fosbury re-invents the high jump competition with the use of his Fosbury flop method instead of the classic scissors technique. High Jump record breakers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=741zHXo9wi8 Richard Douglas ("Dick") Fosbury was born on 6 March 1947 in Portland, Oregon. He is widely credited with inventing the Fosbury flop, a back-first jumping technique that revolutionised the high jump. He developed the flop aged 16 after finding the standard techniques difficult. At the time, jumpers took off from their inside foot and swung their outside foot up and over the bar. Fosbury's technique was to race up to the bar at great speed and take off from his right (or outside) foot. Then he twisted his body so that he went over the bar head first with his back to the bar. His technique truly changed the sport at the 1968 Mexico City Games. Despite scepticism from judges and coaches, Fosbury cleared every height up to 2.22 metres without a miss and then achieved a personal record of 2.24 metres to win the gold medal. By 1980, 13 of the 16 Olympic finalists were using the Fosbury flop.
