There is an office building on Port Royal Street in Kingston, Jamaica, that holds legal authority over more of this planet than any government on Earth. Not more than Jamaica. Not more than the Caribbean. More than the United States, more than China, more than Russia and the European Union combined. It is called the International Seabed Authority, and it governs roughly 54% of the world's oceans — a stretch of seabed larger than every continent on Earth put together. Beneath that seabed lie polymetallic nodules containing more nickel, cobalt and manganese than every known land deposit combined, with published in-place valuations running into the tens of trillions of dollars. In 2026 that arrangement broke into open conflict. Two mining contractors sued the International Seabed Authority itself — the first contentious cases ever filed before the Seabed Disputes Chamber in the history of the law of the sea. The United States, which never ratified the treaty that created the Authority, is now licensing seabed mining under a 1980 domestic statute instead. Nine American companies are advancing thirteen offshore mineral properties across roughly 1.5 million square kilometres of seafloor. A public comment window in Washington closes in October, and a licensing decision is targeted for early 2027. This is the story of how a Caribbean island of under three million people ended up holding the keys to the last unclaimed frontier on Earth, who is now trying to take those keys away, and what happened inside that Kingston meeting room in July 2026 that almost no international outlet reported properly. The Prey Lions Fear Most | Africa's Big Five | FULL EPISODE | Wildlife Documentary opens where every lion pride learns respect: in front of the Cape buffalo, the member of Africas Big Five that kills more lions than any other prey on the continent. Then the film asks a larger question, why the greatest empire any land predator ever built stops exactly where the grass ends. This is the story of the lion empire and the border it could never cross. Lions once ruled three continents, from Greece across Persia to India, and their Ice Age sister lineage ran from Britain to Alaska. Today they hold seven percent of that map. Through cinematic footage and educational storytelling, this documentary follows the machine that carried the empire so far and the terrain that finally switched it off. The machine runs on three things, and the Serengeti shows each one. Formation: at Etosha in Namibia, four hundred eighty six group hunts by individually known lionesses revealed that every female keeps her own position, and hunts succeed when most stand in the right place. Numbers: at Savuti, prides without males lose nearly a fifth of their food to hyenas, and lionesses count strange roars before deciding to attack. Land: thirty eight years across forty six Serengeti prides prove the pride is first of all a technology for holding ground. And a fourth pillar no law records knowledge shown by two orphan sisters on the dry Hoanib riverbed who bring down a giraffe by luck, then fourteen days later bring down an adult by craft. The first time was luck. The second was a trade. Then the border. In the Congo basin, at Odzala, lions clung to islands of grass inside a sea of forest and never once stepped into the trees; every rainy season the forest advanced, and the camera traps finally recorded no lions at all. No battle was fought. The empire lost a province to terrain. Across that border, in the Southeast Asian rainforest, the light dies three steps past the treeline and every pillar of the old empire fails at once. Here the Indochinese tiger rules alone, taking on the gaur, the largest wild cattle on Earth. A dhole army of fifteen kilogram hunters coordinates by whistles it cannot see through, driving sambar deer into the water. A clouded leopard, the last saber tooth of the modern age, is stopped by a gibbon alarm network that fires eight times out of eight. And in the layer where light has never existed, a king cobra and a reticulated python lock onto each other until both are dead — because the dark has no king.
