Czech Gymnastics Icon Věra Čáslavská - A National Hero | Mexico 1968 Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe With the added political pressure surrounding her participation in the Games, Czech gymnast Vera Caslavska puts on an incredible performance at the Mexico 1968 Olympic Games. After winning three gold medals at the 1964 Tokyo Games, Vera Caslavska was the favourite to repeat her success in 1968. In April she had signed the "Manifesto of 2000 Words", which rejected Soviet involvement in Czechoslovakia. Two months before the Olympic Games began, Soviet tanks rolled into Prague. Warned that she was in danger of being arrested, Caslavska fled to the mountains. In hiding, she kept in shape by swinging from trees and practising her floor exercises in a meadow. After three weeks, the government allowed her to join the rest of the Czech team in Mexico City. Caslavska competed under enormous pressure against Soviet athletes. Despite the rudimentary preparation, she successfully defended her all-around and vault titles, adding two more golds and two silvers. The Mexican people identified with her stand against oppression, and she became the star of the Games. Upon her return, she was not allowed to take employment by the Soviet government unless she stated she had not signed the manifesto. She refused. In 1989, after the fall of Communism, she was reinstated as a public figure and became an adviser to President Vaclev Havel. [Read more] At the Paris 1924 Olympic Games, one of her biggest rivals, French player Suzanne Lenglen had withdrawn from the competition as a result of illness. During the tournament, Helen Wills showed her usual strength and won her single matches easily. In the gold medal match against Didi Vlasto from France, Wills dominated, winning by 6-2, 6-2. Helen Wills would still team up with Hazel Wightman in the doubles final to take another Olympic gold and repeat Suzanne Lenglen's feat in the Antwerp 1920 Olympic Games four years before. Later in her biography, Helen Wills described her participation at the Games: ""The courts were very good, and as the weather was hot, they became extremely fast by the end of the week. 📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe Relive the moment Uzbekistan's Lina Cheryazova wins the first ever gold medal in the women's aerials event, a bitter sweet moment for Cheryazova as she would later receive some very sad family news. When women's aerials was added to the Olympic programme, it was assumed that Lina Cheryazova would be the first champion. She was the defending world champion and the only female aerialist to consistently perform successful triple flips. In the weeks before the Lillehammer Games, she won five straight World Cup events. But while training in Lillehammer, Cheryazova crashed and was knocked unconscious. In the qualifying round, the top 12 would advance to the final. Sixteenth after the first of two jumps, Cheryazova barely squeezed through to the final by moving up to twelfth place. In the final, she recovered her form and won the gold medal by less than a point. When she went to telephone her parents back in Uzbekistan, team officials informed her that her mother had died three weeks earlier. Her mother's dying wish had been that Lina not be told until after the Olympic competition. Micheline Ostermeyer - Discus, Shot Put & Artist | London 1948 Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe Relive the amazing performance from artist Micheline Ostermeyer at the London 1948 Olympic Games, winning gold in the women's shot put and discus events. Three months before the Olympic Games, pianist Micheline Ostermeyer graduated with high honours from the Paris Conservatory of Music and throughout her preparations for the 1948 Olympic Games, she continued to practice the piano five hours a day. In London she used the hands that so delicately played the piano to throw both the shot and the discus. In her first event, the discus, Ostermeyer was in third place with only one round left. However, her final throw of 41.92m gave her a victory of 75cm. Four days later, she earned her second gold medal by winning the shot put by 66cm. Finally, she competed in the high jump and earned a bronze medal behind high jump specialists Alice Coachman of the United States and Dorothy Tyler of Great Britain. Ostermeyer celebrated her shot put victory by performing an impromptu Beethoven recital back at the French team headquarters. Her success in athletics actually hurt her reputation as a concert pianist, and for the next six years she was afraid to play Liszt because he was too "sportif." However, Ostermeyer continued to defend her "divided life." "Sport," she said, "taught me to relax; the piano gave me strong biceps and a sense of motion and rhythm."
