Anita Lonsborough Sets 200m Backstroke World Record For Gold - Rome 1960 Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe An amazing race takes place in the women's 200m backstroke event at the Rome 1960 Olympic Games as Great Britain's Anita Lonsborough sets a new world record, beating her German rival Wiltrud Urselmann to the Olympic gold medal. The stage was set. German swimmer Wiltrud Urselmann, the current world record holder for the women's 200m breaststroke was up against the previous record holder, Anita Lonsbrough from Great Britain. While Urselmann held the record for the event, Lonsborough had a history of beating her rival when they were placed head to head. At the Olympic Games, anything could happen. Knowing the nineteen year-old Brit was a very strong finisher, Urselmann began the race at a very strong pace to take the early lead. Lonsbrough only managed to caught up and pass Urselmann in the final 50 metres, with the German fighting back harder than in any previous race between the two of them. With an Olympic gold medal at stake, Lonsbrough also brought her greatest effort to final metres, becoming the new Olympic champion with a new record time of 2m49.5s. Anita Lonsbrough was the most famous British swimmer for decades, as the last British woman swimmer to win Olympic gold until Rebecca Adlington at the Beijing 2008 Games. USA's Women Set New 4x100m World Record For Gold - Helsinki 1952 Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe Highlights from the Helsinki 1952 Olympic Games as the USA women's 4x100m team of Mae Faggs, Catherine Hardy, Barbara Jones and Janet Moreau set a new world record as they win the gold medal. The Helsinki Games saw many records fall, including the women's 4x100 metres at the Athletics stadium, which was broken both at the qualifying heats and once again in the final. The Australian team had qualified in first place with a World Record time of 46.1seconds. In the same heat as the Aussie team was the defending champion team of the Netherlands, who took the last spot in the final with 47.1s. The other four teams to make it to the finals were Germany (46.3s), United States (46.5s), Great Britain (46.6s) and the Soviet Union (46.7s). From those times it was easy to imagine that the final would be a close challenge. At the final change over the American team who had the lead, with Catherine Hardy taking to the finish just ahead of the German team, both with clocked times of 45.9s a new Olympic and world record. The British team completed the podium at 46.2, with the Soviets right behind at 46.3s. Don Schollander - First To Win Multiple Swimming Golds - Tokyo 1964 Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe Classic Olympic highlights as Don Schollander becomes the first Olympic swimmer to win multiple gold medals at one edition of the Games in Tokyo 1964. In recent years, we have become accustomed to the idea of a swimmer winning multiple gold medals, but it wasn't always recognised as such a possibility. In 1964, the American Don Schollander became the first Olympic swimmer to win four gold medals at a single Games, a feat that was all the greater because the victories were accompanied by three world records and one Olympic record. And all this, despite missing out on his favourite event. Schollander had learnt to swim well thanks to the teaching of his uncle, who ran a swimming school. At high school, he wanted to play American football, but was judged too small and so turned to swimming instead. His talent was obvious and, in 1962, he won three freestyle events at the American Championships. Selection for the Olympic team was assured, but the pity was that his strongest race, the 200m freestyle, was not part of the programme for Tokyo. Instead, he was chosen for the 100m, 400m, 4x100m relay and the 4x200m relay. First up was the 100m, in which Schollander took the lead not long after the turn and held off the challenge of Britain's Bobby McGregor to earn gold and an Olympic record. Next up was the 4x100m relay, in which he swam the anchor leg, inheriting a substantial lead to bring his team home in a new world record. The third of his four finals was the 400m. Schollander's used his 200m excellence to hold the lead at half distance, but if his rivals were expecting him to fade then they were to be disappointed. Victory came with a margin of more than two and a half seconds, lowering his own world record. If that victory seemed easy, the triumph of the 4x200m team was even more straightforward. The USA was so confident in this event that a reserve team had been used in qualifying -- and had still set the fastest time. In the final, with Schollander again on the anchor leg, they demolished the world record, becoming the first team ever to go faster than eight minutes and finishing the race more than seven seconds ahead of Germany, in second. It was the first time that an American had won four golds since Jesse Owens in 1936 and also made Schollander the only quadruple winner of the 1964 Games. On his return home, he was acclaimed as the USA's athlete of the year, but he was a reluctant star. He disliked the limelight and retired after the 1968 Games, in which he won a gold and silver, saying that he was sick of water, and wouldn't be taking a bath or shower for the next two years! Bob Hayes - Only Man To Win Olympic Gold & Superbowl | Tokyo 1964 Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe Highlights from the Tokyo 1964 Olympic Games as the USA's Bob Hayes wins the gold medal in the men's 100m event before going on to add the Superbowl to his impressive list of accolades. The 100m title at the Tokyo 1964 Olympic Games went to Bob Hayes, probably one of the fastest runners who has ever lived and certainly one of the most successful, even though his career was short. In the run-up to the Olympic Games, he appeared entirely unbeatable, winning each of 49 races in which he took part between 1962 and 1964. Hayes set a clutch of sprinting records. He was the first person to run the 100 yards (91.4m) in 9.1 seconds, and the first person to cover 60 yards (54.8m) in less than six seconds. The form book had him down as a red-hot favourite. He won his first-round race with ease, then won his quarter-final with a similar level of comfort. The only question now remaining was whether, under pressure, he may be hampered by a leg injury he had sustained a few months previously, but the semi-final seemed to answer that final doubt. He recorded a time of 9.91 seconds, which would have smashed the world record, but was not recognised because it was wind-assisted. It was more than enough, though, to get him into the final. He was placed in Lane 1, which had to be raked over after being badly dug up by athletes at the start of the 20km walk. Hayes was also wearing borrowed spikes, because one of his own pair was lost when it was kicked under his bed in the athletes' village. Yet he exploded out of the blocks, took an early lead, and won by 2m, equalling the world record. It was the 49th win in a row -- Hayes only lost once over 100m, and never over 100 yards (91.4m). His final act as an athlete, though, may have been his greatest. He ran the anchor leg in the 4x100m, and took over with the USA team in fifth place. What followed was an astonishing display of speed, strength and determination as he brought the baton home with a three-metre margin. It's believed his time for that 100m was around 8.8 secs, a remarkable pace even allowing for the flying start. After the Games, Hayes transferred to playing professional American football and was a huge success. He spent nearly a decade playing for the Dallas Cowboys, before finishing his career with the San Francisco 49ers, and is the only person to have secured victory in both the Olympic Games and the Super Bowl. The 'Scariest Time' I've Seen For US Tech: Dan Ives
The Trump administration's antitrust posture is a headwind for big tech, with ongoing probes and trials against companies like Meta, Amazon, and Alphabet. Despite expectations of a more favorable regulatory backdrop, the administration is continuing and even escalating antitrust actions started under the Biden administration. The antitrust uncertainty is contributing to market volatility and impacting tech stocks, with the Nasdaq 100 Index down 19% this year, although some analysts view the risks as manageable and potentially creating buying opportunities. Dan Ives, Global Head of Technology at Wedbush Securities gives his outlook on tech and how this market will change US tech. -------- Watch Bloomberg Radio LIVE on YouTube Weekdays 7am-6pm ET WATCH HERE: http://bit.ly/3vTiACF Follow us on X: https://twitter.com/BloombergRadio Subscribe to our Podcasts: Bloomberg Daybreak: http://bit.ly/3DWYoAN Bloomberg Surveillance: http://bit.ly/3OPtReI Bloomberg Intelligence: http://bit.ly/3YrBfOi Balance of Power: http://bit.ly/3OO8eLC Bloomberg Businessweek: http://bit.ly/3IPl60i Listen on Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with the Bloomberg Business app: Apple CarPlay: https://apple.co/486mghI Android Auto: https://bit.ly/49benZy Visit our YouTube channels: Bloomberg Podcasts: https://www.youtube.com/bloombergpodcasts Bloomberg Television: https://www.youtube.com/@markets Bloomberg Originals: https://www.youtube.com/bloomberg Quicktake: https://www.youtube.com/@BloombergQuicktake

John Kuck Wins Shot Put Gold With New World Record - Amsterdam 1928 Olympics
📲 Subscribe to @olympics: http://oly.ch/Subscribe USA's John Kuck wins the shot put gold medal at the Amsterdam 1928 Olympic Games by throwing a new world record distance in the event. Throughout his school life in Kansas, John Kuck was the most prodigious of field athletes, breaking a multitude of records in all the throwing disciplines. Blessed with an agile frame and lightning bursts of speed, Kuck was among the favourites going into the Olympics in Amsterdam yet a broken ankle threatened to derail his chances before the competition even started. As a student at Emporia State University in Kansas, he broke the world record in the shot put and the javelin and after a distinguished athletics career which saw him break more than 100 records the Amsterdam Games were very much seen as a swansong. He and the German thrower Emile Hirschfeld, who claimed a new world record of his own just months before the Games started, were the warm favourites for gold when the competition started. In the qualifying round at the Olympic Stadium his ankle injury was clear for all to see and he carefully threw the bare minimum to ensure his place in the six-man final. His US colleague, Herman Brix who would later become a prolific film actor, broke the Olympic record in qualifying. Come the final and all the competitors were at the peak of their form. Using a more side-on throwing style to their modern-day equivalents, the standard was high. It was clear a throw near or better than Hirschfeld's best mark of 15.79 would be required to take the gold. Hirschfeld fell four centimetres short but Kuck rose to the occasion. The pain from his ankle injury set to one side, Kuck sent the shot out to a new world record mark of 15.87. Hirschfeld would become the first man to break 16 metres at a meeting in his native Germany barely a month after the Games concluded.
