Darkness Falls - Behind the Scenes | Life Below Zero
It's a complicated ordeal to film the Hailstones sledding up the frozen river. And when a blizzard rolls in, the crew has to improvise. ➡ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/NatGeoSubscribe ➡ Watch all clips of Life Below Zero here: http://bit.ly/WatchLifeBelowZero ➡ LIFE BELOW ZERO AIRS TUESDAYS 9/8c. About Life Below Zero: Life Below Zero follows six people as they battle for the most basic necessities in the state with the lowest population density in the United States. Living at the ends of the world's loneliest roads and subsisting off the rugged Alaskan bush, they battle whiteout snow storms, man-eating carnivores, questionable frozen terrain, and limited resources through a long and bitter winter. Some of them are lone wolves; others have their families beside them. All must overcome despairing odds to brave the wild and survive through to the spring. And when spring arrives in Alaska, rising temperatures bring mounting challenges as they work to prepare for yet another winter. Watch These Millipedes Glow in the Dark | National Geographic
The millipede Motyxia sequoiae, which lives at the upper elevations of the Sierra Nevada, glows bluish green—a warning to predators that the arthropod contains toxic cyanide. All 11 species and subspecies in the genus Motyxia glow, but those at lower elevations of the mountains glow less brightly. Scientists now think the bioluminescence first evolved as a way for millipedes at lower elevations to cope with the stress of living in a hot, dry environment and later evolved into a warning signal as the species moved up the mountains. ➡ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/NatGeoSubscribe About National Geographic: National Geographic is the world's premium destination for science, exploration, and adventure.
