Learning the Art of Traditional Tattooing on the Cook Islands | Short Film Showcase
Englishman Croc Coulter lives in Rarotonga, the largest of the Cook Islands in the Pacific Ocean. He has become a master of the traditional Polynesian art of tātatau—an ancient tattooing process that involves using handmade tools of bone or tusks and ink to mark the skin. The artistry is to be bestowed or handed down in a ceremony, but the apprentice must first fit the bill. In this short film by Robert George, we learn how respect for tradition, tools, and designs are what will keep tātatau alive. ➡ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/NatGeoSubscribe ➡ Get More Short Film Showcase: http://bit.ly/ShortFilmShowcase About Short Film Showcase: The Short Film Showcase spotlights exceptional short videos created by filmmakers from around the web and selected by National Geographic editors. Ebola Deaths Top 200 in Africa as Officials Warn of Wider Risk
Ebola may have killed more than 200 people so far in the Democratic Republic of Congo and is turning into a regional security threat as it spills over to neighboring countries. #africa #congo #health #worldnews The Ebola response is taking place in one of the world’s most unstable regions, where armed groups control territory, health systems are fragile and attacks on treatment centers have disrupted containment efforts. The crisis is being driven by the rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, for which there are no approved vaccines or antibody treatments, and the WHO declared the epidemic a public health emergency of international concern on May 17. Rare Footage: Hundreds Gather at a 1920s African-American Baptism | National Geographic
The practice of communal outdoor baptism was—and in some cases still is—a central community event among both black and white evangelical churches in America. This home movie footage from Oklahoma, filmed in the mid-1920s by Reverend S. S. Jones, a minister and businessman who lived in the region, provides a penetrating view into the spiritual lives of people in the state’s many booming African-American towns. Rev. Jones had deep connections to the lives of those gathered around the water for the event, allowing him to record up close an event that some of the congregants may have remembered as among their lives’ most important moments. ➡ Subscribe: https://on.natgeo.com/4p5A0D6 About National Geographic: National Geographic is the world's premium destination for critically acclaimed storytelling around science and exploration.
