US equity futures rise after the Kremlin confirmed that Presidents Putin and Trump will meet for summit talks in the next few days. President Trump's sweeping new tariffs officially took hold, as he barrels forward with his turbulent push to reshape global trade. The president also announced his plans for a 100% tariff on chip imports while exempting Apple with its increased US investment. Three Fed officials voiced their concerns over the US labor market, pointing to a potential rate cut in September. Nandini Ramakrishnan of JPMorgan believes that tariffs will be difficult for some EM countries, such as South Korea and Taiwan, to handle. Webtoon Entertainment, the company behind the global webcomic phenomenon, pioneered the vertical-scroll format and drew in more than 150 million users worldwide. It completely dominated South Korea and Japan and its partnership with Disney sent its stock soaring 80%. But is it enough to win over the US market? Sohee Kim reports.

Donald Trump said he would impose a 100% tariff on imports that include semiconductors, though would exempt companies moving production back to the United States, as Apple Inc. CEO Tim Cook and the president announced a fresh $100 billion investment plan from the Oval Office. “We’re going to be putting a very large tariff on chips and semiconductors, but the good news for companies like Apple is, if you’re building in the United States, or have committed to build, without question, committed to build in the United States, there will be no charge,” Trump told reporters. “So in other words, we’ll be putting a tariff of approximately 100% on chips and semiconductors. But if you’re building in the United States of America, there’s no charge,” Trump said. “Even though you’re building and you’re not producing yet, in terms of the big numbers of jobs and all of things building, if you’re building, there will be no charge.” The announcement amounts to a major victory for Apple and Cook, who have faced escalating threats from Trump’s tariffs that threatened to ratchet up the cost of producing their signature phones and computers.  Apple’s $100 billion US investment will include a new manufacturing program designed to bring more of Apple’s production to the US. The company’s American Manufacturing Program partners include glassmaker Corning Inc., Applied Materials Inc., Texas Instruments Inc. and others, the company said.  Corning will dedicate an entire factory in Kentucky to Apple glass production, increasing that company’s workforce in the state by 50%, the iPhone maker said. Russia and the US have agreed on a venue for the meeting and “together with our American colleagues, we are starting to work on specific issues,” with a goal for the talks to take place next week, Kremlin foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov told reporters, according to the Interfax news service. He didn’t identify where the summit will be held. The announcement came a day after Putin met with Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff in the Kremlin for nearly three hours of talks as the US pushed for an end to Russia’s war in Ukraine. Trump has threatened to hit purchasers of Russian oil with secondary tariffs unless Putin agreed to a truce by Friday in the war that’s now in its fourth year. In trade news, President Donald Trump’s sweeping new tariffs officially took hold Thursday, as he barrels forward with his turbulent push to reshape global trade. After months of chaotic threats and reversals, higher rates for almost all US trading partners began just after midnight in New York. Trump signed the directive a week ago, but had to allow time for US Customs and Border Protection to make necessary changes to collect the levies. Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump will meet for summit talks within the next few days, the Kremlin said Thursday. Russia and the US have agreed on a venue for the meeting and “together with our American colleagues, we are starting to work on specific issues,” with a goal for the talks to take place next week, Kremlin foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov told reporters, according to the Interfax news service.
