The behavior has been previously observed by coconut, or veined, octopuses off the coast of Indonesia, where this footage was also filmed. Though other octopuses have been observed manipulating their environment, such as moving rocks to form a barricade, scientists believe carrying shells is a form of tool use in these invertebrates because they carry the shells for future use and must assemble them properly to form a shelter. Each device is about the size of a shoe box and can collect and transmit weather data 10,000 times a day—six times more frequently than older models. Spire’s satellites could be key to finally reining in the stubbornly unpredictable world of weather forecasting, giving us a better idea of when to pack an umbrella and even warning the world’s most vulnerable populations of an impending natural disaster. The whales can grow up to the length of three school buses and require a lot of energy to accelerate in the water. They speed up to about 6.7 miles just before consuming the krill, and the act of opening their mouth slows them down to about 1.1 miles per hour. They then have to expend even more energy to get back up to speed. All of this energy spent may lead the whales to be picky eaters, if the mass of krill is too small they may swim through without opening their mouth to feed.
