A destination for mountain climbers since at least the 16th century, the summit became accessible for casual visitors in 1889, when the Pilatus-Bahn began operation. The railway runs between the town of Alpnachstad and Pilatus Kulm, the peak—a trip of less than three miles. But what made it noteworthy then—and now—is its steep ascent. The maximum grade is 25.6 degrees, or 48 percent, meaning it gains 48 feet in elevation for every 100 feet due forward, disregarding incline. That's far steeper than any conventional railroad. Hence its very particular record: the world's steepest cogwheel railway. EU Expedites Start of US Trade Deal
The European Union finalized the text of its US trade deal after months of negotiations, clearing a major hurdle to ratifying the pact before President Donald Trump’s deadline. The deal would see the EU erase levies on US industrial goods in exchange for a 15% tariff ceiling on the bloc’s exports. Now in Their 70s, Two Friends Return to the Arctic for One More Adventure | Short Film Showcase
Over a span of 40 years, adventurous friends Jim Slinger and Andrew “Tip” Taylor have embarked on more than 30 river expeditions together. Each lasting at least three weeks, the canoeing trips became a ritual that brought friendship and meaning into their lives. In this short film by The Muir Project, the two septuagenarians reflect on a life of exploration while embarking on a trip to the wilderness of Alaska’s Brooks Range. 35 years after their first visit to the Noatak River, the two men retrace their journey and look to the adventures that lie ahead. “I have so many things I want to do, it would take a whole lifetime to do them,” Taylor shares. “And then, that probably wouldn’t be long enough.” ➡ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/NatGeoSubscribe ➡ Get More Short Film Showcase: http://bit.ly/ShortFilmShowcase About Short Film Showcase: The Short Film Showcase spotlights exceptional short videos created by filmmakers from around the web and selected by National Geographic editors. The adult male took the calf by the tail and dove deep underwater ... while its mother blocked the calf’s mother from pursuing its child. The male orca drowned the calf in hopes the young mother would then be willing to mate. This behavior isn't so rare in the animal kingdom. Lions, rodents, and even primates have been known to do this, too.
