Innovating to Improve the Human Condition with Bill and Melinda Gates | National Geographic
In 2015 at the United Nations, world leaders adopted 17 goals aimed at reducing poverty, inequality, and other global ills by 2030. Such goals have long been championed by philanthropists Bill and Melinda Gates. So in 2017 the Gates Foundation launched Goalkeepers, an initiative to spur action and track progress toward the goals. Its 2018 status report says there have been “mind-blowing improvements in the human condition”—but it also calls for more investment and innovation in fighting poverty lest progress against it stall. National Geographic Editor in Chief Susan Goldberg recently sat down with the Gateses for a rare joint interview on the new report, which was released to the public September 18. ➡ Subscribe: https://on.natgeo.com/4p5A0D6 #NationalGeographic #BillGates #MelindaGates About National Geographic: National Geographic is the world's premium destination for science, exploration, and adventure. The forest is a protected area with an appropriate ecosystem for their recovery. Conservationists will observe the animals for up to four weeks to see if they are ready to be released into the wild. Although thousands of clustering bees may sound like the stuff of nightmares, Shaw is quick to reassure worried callers that bee swarms are mostly harmless to humans. Part of a colony’s natural reproduction process, they occur when an expanding population splits and the queen leaves with a large group of worker bees to find a new home. In The Swarm Chaser, join Shaw in the field as she tackles the challenges of relocating honeybee colonies during swarm season. Directed by Maxwell Monty (who was introduced to Shaw when he had a bee problem himself), this short documentary is a charming look at one woman's passion for educating others about the honeybee and the unique way it connects her with the people in her community. Although people have lived in the region of Ha Long Bay for thousands of years, most of the islands remain uninhabited. But these coves and natural towers are rich with wildlife. For centuries, this spectacular seascape has inspired wonder. The name Ha Long, Vietnamese for “descending dragon,” is reflected in a legend: Once, when the Viet people faced invasion, a dragon flew down from heaven to their defense. The creature sprayed not only fire, but also jewels that became the green archipelago. The scientific explanation for the rock formations, known as karst, is also amazing. For millions of years, seashells and sediments fell to an ancient seafloor, forming solid rock. Tectonic activity raised the resulting limestone above water. Rainfall and rivers dissolved exposed rock, and carved valleys that flooded after the last ice age, creating this rare example of a karst field at sea. Features include lakes and caves through the islands, and notches and tunnels where seawater has worn at the pillars' foundations. The fantastic landscape also continues into two adjacent national parks, on Cat Ba Island and Bai Tu Long Bay. You can go kayaking, caving, or even take a ride in a seaplane to experience the grandeur of these enchanting tropical islands. Deadliest Journeys - Guinea: The Land Of The Forgotten
In a thrilling race on gruesome roads, desperate bush Taxi drivers scramble to deliver drugs and vaccines in less than 24 hours. At the other end of the trail sick people and children on borrowed time are waiting. But will they be able to afford the medicine that will save them? A surreal trip to Guinea Conakry, where there are still many serious diseases, such as polio, diphtheria and rabies. A country in full decay where the rutted roads tire the drivers nervously and where the delays they take paralyze the economy of the country ... Located in the west of Africa and in the south of Senegal, Guinea Conakry is nevertheless a country rich. Its subsoil is full of minerals like gold and diamonds, but people never see their color. The film reveals hallucinating realities: the hospital in a town of 200,000 inhabitants, Kissidougou, operates without electricity and the nurse on duty is content with the wreckage of an ambulance to go and save a pregnant woman in difficulty at 75 kilometers away. Poverty pushes families to put their children to work from the age of 6. In a roadside carpentry shop, no less than 102 children are found working and sleeping on the floor in what looks a lot like dormitories in a labor camp. According to Unicef, 25% of young Guineans take the road to work every morning rather than the often inaccessible school! In Guinea Conakry, the forest occupies more than a quarter of the surface of the country and beyond a national pierced with holes the inhabitants abandoned by the state had to create themselves bamboo ladders on cliffs to go from villages to villages. They borrow them at the risk of their lives ...

President Trump says the US is not satisfied yet on Iran deal, “but we will be.” Speaking at a White House cabinet meeting, Trump added that Iran wants to make a deal and are "negotiating on fumes." Earlier Wednesday, the US denied an Iranian state television report on a draft interim peace deal that said maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz could return to normal within a month of it coming into effect. “This report from Iranian controlled media is not true and the MOU they ‘released’ is a complete fabrication,” the White House said in a social media post on Wednesday. “Nobody should believe what Iranian state media is putting out.” -------- Watch Bloomberg Radio LIVE on YouTube Weekdays 7am-6pm ET Saturday & Sunday 7am-10am ET WATCH HERE: http://bit.ly/3vTiACF Follow us on X: https://twitter.com/BloombergRadio Subscribe to our Podcasts: Bloomberg Daybreak: http://bit.ly/3DWYoAN Bloomberg Surveillance: http://bit.ly/3OPtReI Bloomberg Intelligence: http://bit.ly/3YrBfOi Balance of Power: http://bit.ly/3OO8eLC Bloomberg Businessweek: http://bit.ly/3IPl60i Listen on Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with the Bloomberg Business app: Apple CarPlay: https://apple.co/486mghI Android Auto: https://bit.ly/49benZy Visit our YouTube channels: Bloomberg Podcasts: https://www.youtube.com/bloombergpodcasts Bloomberg Television: https://www.youtube.com/@markets Bloomberg Originals: https://www.youtube.com/bloomberg Quicktake: https://www.youtube.com/@BloombergQuicktake
