Guyana is a forgotten and mysterious country. Few people dare to venture inland. However, a handful of truck drivers take all the risks to supply food and gasoline to the gold mines and the few villages there. Aboard their Bedfords, those old English army trucks patched up a thousand times, they must tackle rutted tracks, traverse hostile jungle and brave torrents of mud. Their travels take them to some of the most isolated areas on the planet. Here, we do not count in kilometers, but in days spent on the road. And a simple breakdown can quickly have dramatic consequences ...

Only around 80 individuals remain. The wild populations are split between the islands of Sumatra and Indonesian Borneo. This isolation of small populations, some as small as one or two individuals, is now the species’ biggest threat. A coalition of conservation organizations, including the National Geographic Society, has formed to save the species. The project, called Sumatran Rhino Rescue, aims to locate wild rhinos and safely transfer them to a nearby sanctuary. There, scientists and wildlife managers will assist in the rhinos’ reproduction and care. Eventually, when a healthy population exists, the rhinos will be reintroduced into the wild. Algerian society has undergone profound upheavals over the last century. It started when colonisation brought two cultures into violent contact. Since 1962, and to an even greater extent over the past ten years, Algeria has continuously been affected by oppositions between tradition and modernity, and between religious values and democratic values-as though by so many sequels or continuations of this conflict between two cultures which, beyond decolonisation, is still going on today, what might be called the unavoidable opening up of each society to the goods and values of other societies. Taking an interest in what is happening today in the psychiatric department of an Algerian hospital is a way of taking the pulse of this society, while turning away-as though to obtain the necessary perspective-from the dizzy whirl of events and their presentation in the media. By showing Algerian psychiatrists who have to face up to the slow disintegration of a society, but who are also hurt by the isolation and incomprehension they come up against, the film tries to portray the dominant social malaise in Algeria, and the difficulties the country is facing in attempting to define its collective and national identity. Chosen for its strategic location on the island’s northwestern coast, in the early sixteenth century, Havana grew into the largest port in Spain’s Caribbean colonies. The original layout of Habana Vieja—Old Havana—is still intact. Building ordinances in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries preserved the city’s architectural integrity. Wrought-iron gates, internal courtyards, and stone colonnades adorn the buildings of its five main plazas. Among some 900 surrounding historic structures, a few highlights include the Castillo de la Real Fuerza, one of the oldest existing forts in the Americas, the eighteenth-century Catedral de La Habana on the plaza by the same name, and the Museo de la Ciudad, housed in a baroque palace on Havana's original town square. Even with international recognition, the work of preserving the historic city center remains ongoing. Visitors from around the world flock to Cuba for its pristine beaches, exciting nightlife, and a fascinating, blended cultural heritage of art, music, and design.
