This is the sprawling complex of Angkor Archaeological Park. The site is located in the northwestern region of the country and is only four miles from the city of Siem Reap. The Khmer Empire’s various capitals thrived here from the 9th to 15th centuries, over an empire that stretched from Myanmar to Vietnam. Including forested areas and newly discovered “suburbs” Angkor covers more than 400 square miles—an area considerably larger than New York City’s five boroughs. The massive Angkor Wat is the most famed of all Cambodia’s temples—it even appears on the nation’s flag. The 12th century “temple-mountain” was built as a spiritual home for the Hindu god Vishnu. The temples of Angkor are architectural masterpieces laden with artistic treasures like the bas-relief galleries that tell enduring tales of Cambodian history and legend. Angkor is as much about water as it is about stone—the site boasts an enormous system of artificial canals, dikes, and reservoirs. The West Baray reservoir is the largest of which at 5 miles long and 1.5 miles wide. These massive works skillfully harnessed river and rainwater to quench the thirst of some 750,000 residents in the world’s largest preindustrial city. That water also irrigated wealth-producing crops like rice, which served the Khmer as currency. It’s still a mystery to scientists why the city’s rulers abandoned the site and resettled near the modern capital of Phenom Penh. Some scholars speculate that the downfall of this elaborate water system led to the end of Angkor. The town of Siem Reap is the gateway to Angkor and is filled with lodging, dining, and tour-package options for all budgets. Those preferring to travel by boat can also make the trip from Phnom Penh in some five or six hours—about the same travel time as by road. The airport in Siem Reap has service to Phnom Penh and regular flights abroad to Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, and Laos. The airport in Siem Reap has service to the capital and regular flights to nearby countries. Peak tourist season in Angkor is December and January, when rainfall is less likely and the climate is most kind. No matter the time of year, a visit to Angkor is sure to leave you awestruck. Why Moths are Obsessed with Lamps | National Geographic
The story of the lamp and the moth is one of fatal attraction. The theory is that these primarily nocturnal insects have evolved to travel by the light of the moon and stars. This way of travel is called transverse orientation. An easy way to think about transverse orientation is to imagine a sailor travelling in the direction of the North Star. In theory, moths similarly follow the light source at a precise position and a precise angle to their bodies. This is how moths would navigate for millions of years … by the light of the moon. What moth evolution couldn’t account for was the proliferation of constant electric light in our modern world. When Thomas Edison patented the lightbulb on January 27, 1880 it was a bad day in moth history. These lightbulbs began to act as artificial moons, confusing moths and overwhelming their senses. Since moths are accustomed to orienting to distant light sources, they can be easily disoriented when a closer light source, like a porch lamp, comes into view. When there are really bright lights or ultraviolet lights, the draw becomes almost irresistible … and insects respond to those lights far more than any other wave length. At night, an ultraviolet source is a super stimulant to a moth. These artificial moons also make moths easy targets for predators like birds, bats, and many other animals. While much is still to be learned about moth behavior, one thing is certain. A moth’s obsession with lamps often proves to be a fatal one. ➡ Subscribe: https://on.natgeo.com/4p5A0D6 #NationalGeographic #Moths #Lamps About National Geographic: National Geographic is the world's premium destination for science, exploration, and adventure. A type of European wildcat found only in the Scottish Highlands, around 35 individuals remain. The brother and sister were found alone in the wild, at seven weeks old. Conservation organization Wildcat Haven rescued the orphans. They are now at a rehabilitation center in a large enclosure, with minimal human contact. The two kittens will be released in the West Highlands in the spring, when they are old enough to survive in the wild. Though they appear similar, wildcats can be as much as twice the size of domestic cats. They have mostly unbroken stripes, and thick, blunt tails with distinct bands and a black tip. Keen nocturnal hunters, they commonly hunt small mammals, like mice, voles, and hares. Hybridization, a result of interbreeding with feral and domestic cats, threatens the Scottish wildcats’ survival. Conservationists are working to protect the wildcats’ habitat, and to neuter domestic cats in targeted areas. The kittens were photographed for the National Geographic Photo Ark, a project to document all species in the world's zoos and wildlife sanctuaries — including those that are threatened. Photo Ark aims to use the power of photography to inspire people to help save species at risk. Learn more at natgeophotoark.org.
