In the United States, there are 65,000 minors who are incarcerated. Children as young as 9 years old can be arrested and sent to prison. This country is the only one that has not ratified the International Convention on the Rights of the Child and treats its children as adults in the justice system. Many minors are held in adult prisons, but most are sent to juvenile facilities. Our team had the opportunity to visit two of these facilities, one in Texas and the other in Utah.

Casting a vibrant blue glow as they swim, flashlight fish owe their bioluminescence to the bacteria that grow in an organ underneath their eyes. It's a symbiotic relationship that allows the bacteria to obtain extra oxygen needed to survive, and the fish benefit from the glowing light emitted from the organ, which they can "blink" on and off using special skin folds. In a recent study published in PLOS ONE, it was observed that flashlight fish use the glowing light to coordinate their schooling and avoid predators. Concerned by the rumors and inquiries by law enforcement, the forensic team decided to do a chemical analysis to look for the presence of tramadol in several samples of pangolin scales. The results showed there was no presence of the chemicals. Pangolins are believed to be the most trafficked mammals in the world, and across Asia and Africa their populations are dwindling. The demand for their scales stems from the belief that they have medicinal benefits.
