Reggae, hiplife and r&b all have their place in Ghana's eclectic music scene. Singer Irene Logan describes her style as r&b afro pop. She won a national television talent competition two years ago and after a short period of collaboration with the show's runner up, Jane Awindor as Irene and Jane, Irene struck out on her own. Already one album to the good, she is now working on her sophomore release which has the working title 'Rebirth'. At just 26, talk of rebirth may seem premature but she has already covered a lot of ground and the distance that she wants to travel is far. We met her in Accra when the BBC Africa Kicks bus rolled into town. There we recorded a Network Africa video session of her acapella performance of the track 'Baby' from her upcoming album. She is accompanied by her music director, Joshua Ugboma.

The Memory of Love is the latest novel of Sierra Leonean and Scottish writer Aminatta Forna, she visited Bush House studios for a chat with the BBC's Bola Mosuro. Part two - Oppression and resistance The tortuous events of Sierra Leone's history have dominated Forna's writing. She is the daughter of a former Sierra Leonean cabinet minister and dissident, murdered by the state in 1975. And people's reaction to oppression is a major theme through The Memory of Love and Aminatta Forna's previous works. In this second part of the interview Bola Mosuro asks the author about the audience that she has in mind when she is writing her books.

Part one - Confronting the past The lives of the three central characters are interwoven; Elias Cole is an old history professor who taught at a Freetown university before and after Sierra Leone's first coup in 1969. Kai Mansaray is dedicated to his profession at Freetown's Central Hospital, but plagued by memories of life before and during the civil war which began in 1991. He bonds with British psychologist, Adrian who is running from his own demons in the UK.

In 1915 Ernest Shackleton’s ship, Endurance, sank off the coast of Antarctica, stranding the crew on drifting sea ice. Shackleton’s desperate rescue mission saved all 28 men. But for more than a century afterward, the location of Endurance eluded archaeologists—until this year. National Geographic photographer Esther Horvath was there and recounts the moment when the ship was located 10,000 feet beneath the polar ice. A 2022 expedition discovered Endurance almost two miles below the surface of the Southern Ocean.
